State Architect
Many national governments and states have a public official titled the state architect or government architect. The specific duties and areas of responsibility of state architects vary, but they generally involve responsibility for the design and/or construction of public buildings in the state. The state architect and subordinates typically form an organizational unit variously named the Division of the State Architect, Office of the State Architect, or similar. Principal Architect (Western Australia)
Between 1891 and 1985 the Principal Architect of the Public Works Department (Western Australia) was responsible for the delivery of the state government’s public buildings capital works program throughout Western Australia. In 2003 the government of Premier Geoff Gallop re-established the office as the Government Architect (now part of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage), with the purpose of improving "the design of public buildings and spaces to enhance the quality of the built environment in WA". Field Act
The Field Act is a California state law that mandates earthquake-resistant construction for public school buildings. The Field Act was one of the first pieces of legislation in the United States to mandate earthquake-resistant construction, and had its genesis in the 6.4 magnitude 1933 Long Beach earthquake which occurred on March 10 of that year and destroyed or rendered unsafe 230 school buildings in Southern California. Many school buildings had completely collapsed due to unreinforced masonry construction and/or shoddy workmanship. The earthquake occurred at 5:55pm on a Friday, several hours after school had let out. Had the earthquake occurred while school was in session earlier that afternoon, thousands of casualties, mainly children, would have likely occurred.
