Plutonyl
The plutonyl ion is an oxycation of plutonium in the oxidation state +6, with the chemical formula . It is isostructural with the uranyl ion, compared to which it has a slightly shorter M–O bond. It is easily reduced to plutonium(III). The plutonyl ion forms many complexes, particularly with ligands that have oxygen donor atoms. Plutonyl salts are important in nuclear fuel reprocessing. Chemical properties The chemistry of the plutonyl ion resembles the chemistry of the uranyl ion very closely. Both ions are linear with the metal atom midway between the two oxygen atoms. Many compounds of the two ions are isostructural. The ''ν''Pu–O asymmetric stretching frequency is some 20 cm−1 lower, at ca. 910 cm−1, in complexes with the same ligand set. Plutonium In The Environment
Since the mid-20th century, plutonium in the environment has been primarily produced by human activity. The first plants to produce plutonium for use in Cold War atomic bombs were the Hanford nuclear site in Washington, and the Mayak nuclear plant, in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. Over a period of four decades, "both released more than 200 million curies of radioactive isotopes into the surrounding environment – twice the amount expelled in the Chernobyl disaster in each instance." The majority of plutonium isotopes are not short-lived on a geological timescale, though it has been argued that traces of the long-lived 244Pu isotope still exist in nature. This isotope has been found in lunar soil, meteorites, and in the Oklo natural reactor. However, one study on plutonium in marine sediments indicates that the atomic bomb fallout accounts for 66% of the 239Pu and 59% 240Pu in the English Channel. Uranyl Nitrate
Uranyl nitrate is a water-soluble yellow uranium salt with the formula . The hexa-, tri-, and dihydrates are known. The compound is mainly of interest because it is an intermediate in the preparation of nuclear fuels. In the nuclear industry, it is commonly referred to as yellow salt. Uranyl nitrate can be prepared by reaction of uranium salts with nitric acid. It is soluble in water, ethanol, and acetone. As determined by neutron diffraction, the uranyl center is characteristically linear with short U=O distances. Sulfamic acid, also known as amidosulfonic acid, amidosulfuric acid, aminosulfonic acid, sulphamic acid and sulfamidic acid, is a molecular compound with the formula H3NSO3.
