Oligodynamic Effect
The oligodynamic effect (from Greek language, Greek ''oligos'', "few", and ''dynamis'', "force") is a biocide, biocidal effect of metals, especially heavy metal (chemical element), heavy metals, that occurs even in low concentrations. This effect is attributed to the antibacterial behavior of metal ions, which are absorbed by bacteria upon contact and damage their cell membranes. In modern times, the effect was observed by Carl Nägeli, although he did not identify the cause. Brass doorknobs, brass handrails, and household silver, silverware all exhibit this effect to an extent. Mechanism The metals react with thiol (-SH) or amine (-NH(1,2,3)) groups of proteins, a mode of action to which microorganisms may develop drug resistance, resistance. Burow's Solution
Burow's solution is an aqueous solution of aluminium triacetate. It is available in the U.S.A. as an over-the-counter drug for topical administration, with under the brand name Domeboro (Moberg Pharma). The preparation has astringent and antibacterial properties and may be used to treat a number of skin conditions, including insect bites and stings, rashes caused by poison ivy and poison sumac, swelling, allergies, and bruises. However, its main use is for treatment of otitis (ear infection), including otomycosis (fungal ear infection). Rarely, cases have been reported of temporary hearing loss if used to treat otitis when the eardrum is perforated. Fungicides are pesticides used to kill parasitic fungi or their spores. Fungi can cause serious damage in agriculture, resulting in losses of yield and quality.
