''Les Compères'' (; English title: ComDads) is a 1983 French comedy film written and directed by Francis Veber, and starring Gérard Depardieu, Pierre Richard and Anny Duperey. The film had 4,847,229 admissions in France. In 1997, this movie was remade as ''Fathers' Day'' in the US. When it was released in the U.S. in the summer of 1984, it received negative reviews from many critics. Siskel & Ebert gave it two resounding "thumbs down" marks on their TV show, stating that the movie was "basically a French sitcom" and had too many stupid characters. Plot A teenaged boy has run away from home. His father is ineffective at finding him, so his mother contacts two former lovers from around the time her son was conceived, telling them both that the child is their son and asking them to look for him. Loyset Compère
Loyset Compère ( – 16 August 1518) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance. Of the same generation as Josquin des Prez, he was one of the most significant composers of motets and chansons of that era, and one of the first musicians to bring the light Italianate Renaissance style to France. Life His exact place of birth is not known, but documents of the time assign him to a family from the province of Artois (in modern France), and suggest he may have been born in Hainaut (in modern Belgium). At least one source from Milan indicates he described himself as coming from Arras, also in Artois. Both the date and probable place of birth are extremely close to those of Josquin des Prez; indeed the area around the current French-Belgian border produced an astonishing number of excellent composers in the 15th and 16th centuries, composers whose fame spread throughout Europe. Louis Fursy Henri Compère
Louis Fursy Henri Compère (16 January 1768 – 27 March 1833) was a French general of artillery in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Compère was born in Péronne, Somme. In 1794, he was promoted to ''chef de brigade'', the equivalent of colonel. On 1 May 1794, he was promoted to general of brigade. He was part of the Army of the Danube crossing into the southwest German states in 1799, and participated in the Battle of Ostrach and the Battle of Stockach. He was the brother of the General Claude Antoine Compère (1774–1812). Career He fought at the Battle of Verona on 18 October 1805 where his brigade of Gaspard Amédée Gardanne's division supported the initial attack of André Masséna's converged ''voltiguers''. Later his soldiers formed squares to drive off a counterattack by Austrian hussars. He also led his troops at the Battle of Caldiero on 29 to 31 October in the same year. René Compère
René Compère (December 28, 1906 in Brussels – April 24, 1969 in Brussels) was a Belgian jazz trumpeter. Compère played with Billy Smith's Brussels-based band in 1923 before founding his own ensemble, the New Royal Dance Orchestra. As a member of Smith's group, he met Charles Remue, with whom he worked for several years; Jean Omer also played in Compère's orchestra. He recorded with Fernand Coppieters in 1929, then joined Josephine Baker's backing band for several European tours in the first half of the 1930s. He was hired to play aboard the ship SS ''Normandie'' for transatlantic voyages. In 1937 he played at the Paris Exposition with Django Reinhardt, then worked in France with Joe Bouillon and in Belgium with Joe Heyne. During World War II he recorded with . Adéodat Constant Adolphe Compère-Morel (5 October 1872 – 3 August 1941) was a French people, French Socialist politician, agronomist, orator and writer. Characterized as a Marxism, Marxist doctrine, doctrinaire, he was one of the founders of the Socialist Party of France (1902), Socialist Party of France (''Parti socialiste de France'', PSdF). A gifted propagandist, he was a particular expert on social reform in rural France and became viewed as his party's agrarian specialist. He was an associate of the likes of revolutionary Marxist socialist journalist and literary critic Paul Lafargue and authored many books and papers, several of which were partly written with Lafargue. His best known and most influential work was ''Encyclopédie socialiste syndicale et coopérative de l'International ouvrière'', published in 1912. Léon Compère-Léandre
Léon Compère-Léandre (1874?–1936) was a Martiniquais shoemaker in Saint-Pierre on the French Caribbean island of Martinique when Mount Pelée erupted on May 8, 1902, and destroyed the town. He was one of only 2 (arguably 3) known survivors. His own description of the morning of May 8, 1902, follows.
