Kick-off (association Football)
A kick-off is the method of starting and, in some cases, restarting play in a game of association football. The rules concerning the kick-off are part of Law 8 of the Laws of the Game. Award A kick-off is used to start each half of play, and each period of extra time where applicable. The team that wins the pre-game coin toss may choose either * to take the initial kick-off (in which case the team losing the toss chooses which end of the pitch to attack in the first half), or * to choose which end of the pitch to attack in the first half (in which case the team losing the toss takes the initial kick-off). The kick-off to start the second half is taken by team which did not take the initial kick-off. If extra time is played, another coin-toss is used at the beginning of this period. The ''Kick Off'' franchise is a series of football simulation video games created by Dino Dini. ''Kick Off'' was published by Anil Gupta's publishing house Anco Software for the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga. First released in 1989, ''Kick Off'' was well-received and won awards. After the release of ''Kick Off'' several sequels were released. ''Player Manager'' was released in 1990. The game was the first game to combine a management environment (including tactics, league play, transfers, and detailed player attributes) with a football game engine (based on that of ''Kick Off''). '' Kick Off 2'' was released in 1990 as a sequel to ''Kick Off''. The game introduced a number of new features as well as several small alterations. In 1992, Dino Dini left Anco and signed a contract for Virgin Games, which released '' Goal!'' in 1993. A kickoff is a method of starting a drive in gridiron football. Additionally, it may refer to a kickoff time, the scheduled time of the first kickoff of a game. Typically, a kickoff consists of one team – the "kicking team" – kicking the ball to the opposing team – the "receiving team". The receiving team is then entitled to ''return'' the ball, i.e., attempt to advance it towards the kicking team's end zone, until the player with the ball is tackled by the kicking team, goes out of bounds, scores a touchdown, or the play is otherwise ruled dead. Kickoffs take place at the start of each half of play, the beginning of overtime in some overtime formats, and after scoring plays. In the sport of Australian rules football, a kick-in (sometimes known as a kick-out, and known for much of the game's history as a kick-off) is the common name for the procedure to restart the game after a behind. It involves a defender from the team who did not score kicking the ball back into play from the defensive goal square. Rules The process of the kick-in is described under Law 16 of the 2019 laws of Australian rules football, ''Procedure after a behind has been scored''. After the goal umpire has signalled a behind (but not necessarily after communicating it to the other goal umpire with the waving of one flag), any player from the team which did not score takes possession of the ball in the defensive goal square.
