Dissociation – The Hidden Epidemic
Dissociation, in the wide sense of the word, is an act of disuniting or separating a complex object into parts. Dissociation may also refer to: * Dissociation (chemistry), general process in which molecules or ionic compounds (complexes, or salts) split into smaller particles, usually in a reversible manner * Dissociation (neuropsychology), identification of the neural substrate of a particular brain function through various methods * Dissociation (psychology), an experience of having one's attention and emotions detached from the environment * Dissociation (rhetoric), a rhetorical device in which the speaker separates a notion considered to form a unitary concept into two new notions to affect an audience in some way * ''Dissociation'' (album), by the Dillinger Escape Plan, 2016 * ''Dissociation: Progress in the Dissociative Disorders'' (1988–1997), a medical journal published by International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation See also * "Disassociation", a 202 ...

Dissociation (chemistry)
Dissociation in chemistry is a general process in which molecules (or ionic compounds such as salt (chemistry), salts, or coordination complex, complexes) separate or split into other things such as atoms, ions, or radical (chemistry), radicals, usually in a reversible manner. For instance, when an acid dissolves in water, a covalent bond between an electronegativity, electronegative atom and a hydrogen atom is broken by heterolytic fission, which gives a proton (H+) and a negative ion. Dissociation is the opposite of association or recombination. Dissociation constant For reversible dissociations in a chemical equilibrium :AB A + B the dissociation constant ''K''d is the ratio of dissociated to undissociated compound :K_d = \mathrm where the brackets denote the equilibrium concentrations of the species. Dissociation degree The dissociation degree \alpha is the fraction of original solute molecules that have dissociated. It is usually indicated by the Greek symbol α. More acc ...

Dissociation (neuropsychology)
In neuropsychology, dissociation involves identifying the neural substrate of a particular brain function through identification of case studies, neuroimaging, or neuropsychological testing. Dissociation types Single dissociation When dissecting complex mental tasks into their subcomponents, a researcher can establish a "single dissociation" between functions. This is done by demonstrating that a lesion to brain structure A disrupts function X but not function Y. Such a demonstration allows one to infer that function X and function Y are independent of each other in some way. Dr. Oliver Sacks has described many famous cases of dissociation in his books. Patient D.F., for example, was unable to place a card in a slot, but could do so when told to place it "as if mailing a letter". From this the conclusion was drawn that judging orientation is one ability (which D.F. had lost) and visual control of an action another (which D.F. could still do).E. Bruce Goldstein: Sensation and Perc ...

Dissociation (psychology)
Dissociation is a concept which concerns a wide array of experiences, ranging from a mild emotional detachment from the immediate surroundings, to a more severe disconnection from physical and emotional experiences. The major characteristic of all dissociative phenomena involves a detachment from reality, rather than a false perception of reality as in psychosis. The phenomena are diagnosable under the ''DSM-5'' as a group of disorders as well as a symptom of other disorders through various diagnostic tools. Its cause is believed to be related to neurobiological mechanisms, trauma, anxiety, and psychoactive drugs. Research has further related it to suggestibility and hypnosis. History French philosopher and psychologist Pierre Janet (1859–1947) is considered to be the author of the concept of dissociation. Unlike some conceptions of dissociation, Janet did not believe that dissociation was a psychological defense. Janet claimed that dissociation occurred only in person ...

Dissociation (rhetoric)
Dissociation is a rhetorical device in which the speaker separates a notion considered by the audience to form a unitary concept into two new notions.Van Rees, M.A. "Strategic Maneuvering with Dissociation." Argumentation 20.4 (2006): 473-487. Web. 13 Feb. 2014. Kathryn Olson, Director of the Rhetorical Leadership Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, explains that by doing this, the speaker fundamentally changes the reality of the thought system in question by creating a disjunction between what was an integrated concept to begin with. According to M.A. van Rees, dissociation is a two step process of distinction and definition A definition is a statement of the meaning of a term (a word, phrase, or other set of symbols). Definitions can be classified into two large categories: intensional definitions (which try to give the sense of a term), and extensional definitio ...: distinction divides a single concept into two new notions for the audience and definition re ...

International Society For The Study Of Trauma And Dissociation
The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) is a controversial nonprofit professional organization of health professionals and individuals who are interested in advancing the scientific and societal understandings of trauma-based disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder, complex posttraumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, and the dissociative disorders. While serving as a platform for discussion and understanding of these topics, the ISSTD has also attracted attention and criticism regarding its promotion of controversial treatments and conspiracy theories, such as discredited theories of government mind control related to hypnosis and unsubstantiated claims of satanic ritual abuse. Profile In the 1980s, the ISSMP&D, the International Society for the Study of Multiple Personality and Dissociation, grouped clinicians and researchers primarily interested in Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). In 1995 the ISSMP&D was renamed the Inter ...
