Decidedly (March 3, 1959 – November 12, 1984) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who is best known for winning the 1962 Kentucky Derby. Background Decidedly was a gray horse bred in California by George Pope. His sire Determine from whom he inherited his gray coat, won the Kentucky Derby in 1954. Decidedly's dam Gloire Fille was descended from the broodmare La France (foaled 1928) who was the female line ancestor of numerous other major winners including Phalanx, Danzig Connection and Johnstown. Racing career Ridden by Bill Hartack, Decidedly set a new Churchill Downs track record for 1¼ miles in winning the 1962 Derby. Determine (April 7, 1951 – September 27, 1972) was an American Thoroughbred race horse. In a racing career which lasted from 1953 through 1955, the California-trained colt ran forty-four times and won eighteen races. His best season was 1954 when he became the first gray horse to win the Kentucky Derby. Background Determine was sired by the British stallion Alibhai (horse), Alibhai a son of the 1933 Epsom Derby and St. Leger Stakes winner Hyperion (horse), Hyperion. Alibhai's other progeny included Your Host (horse), Your Host and Flower Bowl (horse), Flower Bowl. Determine's dam was Koubis, born with a cleft palate. Johnstown (horse)
Johnstown (March 12, 1936 – May 14, 1950) was an American Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse who won two out of every three races he competed in. Background Johnstown was a bay horse bred at Claiborne Farm. He was purchased by William Woodward Sr. and raced under his Belair Stable banner. Racing career After a successful season racing at age two when he won seven of his twelve starts, in the spring of 1939 Johnstown gave trainer Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons his third straight Wood Memorial Stakes, an important stepping stone to the U.S. Triple Crown races. Tracery (1909–1924) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and Horse breeding#Terminology, sire, best known for winning the St. Leger Stakes in 1912. In a career which lasted from June 1912 until October 1913 he ran nine times and won six races. After finishing third on his debut in the 1912 Epsom Derby Tracery never lost another completed race at level weights. He won the St. James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and St. Leger Stakes in 1912 and the Eclipse Stakes and Champion Stakes as a four-year-old in 1913. He was brought down by a protester in the 1913 Ascot Gold Cup. After his retirement from racing he became a highly successful breeding stallion in Britain and Argentina. Mahmoud (1933–1962) was a French-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career which lasted from April 1935 to September 1936 he ran eleven times and won four races. In 1935 he won two of Britain's most important two-year-old races and was officially rated the second-best colt of his generation. In 1936 he won only once from five starts, but this win came in the Derby in which he set a race record which stood for fifty-nine years, and became the third of only four greys to win the race. A stud animal is a registered animal retained for breeding. The terms for the male of a given animal species (stallion (horse), stallion, bull, rooster, etc.) usually imply that the animal is intact—that is, not Castration, castrated—and therefore capable of siring offspring.
