Steven Ascher
Steven Ascher is an American independent director, producer and writer. He was nominated for an Academy Award and has received the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival among many other awards. His book ''The Filmmaker’s Handbook'' is a bestselling text. Background Ascher attended Wesleyan University for a year, he then went on to pursue filmmaking in New York. He worked at the MIT Film Section with documentarians Ed Pincus and Richard Leacock. He graduated from Harvard University, summa cum laude, in visual and environmental studies. He and his wife Jeanne Jordan produced a wide variety of media through their production company, West City Films. ''Crumb'' is a 1995 American documentary film about the noted underground cartoonist R. Crumb and his family (including his two brothers) and his outlook on life. Directed by Terry Zwigoff and produced by Lynn O'Donnell, it won widespread acclaim. It was released in the USA on April 28, 1995, having been screened at film festivals (and winning the Documentary Prize at Sundance) that year. Jeffery M. ''American Experience'' is a television program airing on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the United States. The program airs documentaries, many of which have won awards, about important or interesting events and people in American history. The series premiered on October 4, 1988 and was originally titled ''The American Experience'', but the article "The" was dropped during a later rebrand and image update. ''Girls Like Us'' is a 1997 documentary film directed by Tina Di Feliciantonio and Jane C. Wagner. It follows the lives of four teenage girls of Philadelphia for four years. ''Girls Like Us'' was funded by the Independent Television Service (ITVS) with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Critical reception Godfrey Cheshire of ''Variety'' magazine wrote, "If few films offer such rich human material in such succinct, balanced, nonpolemical form, fewer still are timely enough to serve as ideal conversation pieces for young women facing similar situations. Wagner and Di Feliciantonio's doc could prove as useful as it is intelligent." The film won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Prize for Documentary in 1997. Jeanne Jordan is an American independent director, producer and editor. She was nominated for an Academy Award and has received the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival among many other awards. Background Jordan graduated from the University of Iowa and began her career at Iowa Public Television. She moved to Boston to work as a freelance editor at WGBH, Boston's public television station. She went on to edit many programs for WGBH and was the series producer of the children's series Postcards from Buster. She and her husband Steven Ascher produce a wide variety of media through their production company, West City Films.
