Zuoying Naval Base
Zuoying District () is a District (Taiwan), district of Kaohsiung, Kaohsiung City in southern Republic of China, Taiwan. Zuoying District has the most populous Village (Republic of China), village in Taiwan: Fushan Village. History Zuoying was established in the mid-seventeenth century as a military fortress, known as Old City of Zuoying, Old Fengshan (鳳山, also Old Fongshan). It is now the site of Tsoying Harbour, known formerly as . 'Sa-ei' is the Japanese on'yomi (Chinese reading) of the city's name in Chinese characters, but was romanized as 'Tsoying' after World War II by American Naval Consultants. In May 1960 a Republic of China Air Force North American F-86 Sabre crashed into a neighborhood in Zuoying killing 11 and injuring 45. Republic Of China Navy
The Republic of China Navy (ROCN, Chinese, 中華民國海軍) , colloquially known as the Taiwanese Navy ( Chinese, 台湾海军) by Western or mainland Chinese media, or commonly referred as the National Military Navy ( Chinese, 國軍海軍) by local Taiwanese people, is the maritime branch of Taiwan's military, the Republic of China Armed Forces. District (Taiwan)
Districts are administrative subdivisions of Taiwan's Special municipality (Taiwan), special municipalities of the second level and Provincial city (Taiwan), provincial cities of the third level formerly under its provinces. Kaohsiung Confucius Temple
The Kaohsiung City Temple of Confucius () is a temple dedicated to the memory of Confucius near Lotus Pond, Zuoying District, in the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung. With an area of , it is Taiwan's largest Confucian temple complex. History The temple was originally constructed in 1684, during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor. However, during the Japanese colonial period, the temple fell into disuse and disrepair. Only the Chongsheng shrine remains intact; it can be seen on the west side of the Old City Elementary School. A new temple was constructed in 1976, now on the northwest corner of Lotus Pond. The new design was based on Song dynasty architecture, as well as the design of the Temple of Confucius, Qufu. Kuomintang
The Kuomintang (KMT) is a major political party in the Republic of China (Taiwan). It was the one party state, sole ruling party of the country Republic of China (1912-1949), during its rule from 1927 to 1949 in Mainland China until Retreat of the government of the Republic of China to Taiwan, its relocation to Taiwan, and in Taiwan Martial law in Taiwan, ruled under martial law until 1987. Military Dependents' Village
Military dependents' villages () are communities in Taiwan built in the late 1940s and the 1950s whose original purpose was to serve as provisional housing for soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines of the Republic of China Armed Forces, along with their dependents from mainland China after the Government of the Republic of China (ROC) and the Kuomintang (KMT) retreated to Taiwan in 1949. They ended up becoming permanent settlements, forming distinct cultures as enclaves of mainlanders in Taiwanese cities. Over the years, many military dependents' villages have suffered from problems such as housing dereliction, abandonment, urban decay, and becoming slums. The houses in these villages were often haphazardly and poorly constructed, having been built hastily and with limited funding. Shoushan (Kaohsiung)
Shoushan (, also commonly known in English as Monkey Mountain or Apes' Hill, in Japanese as Kotobuki-yama) is a mountain in Gushan District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, north of the main entrance to Kaohsiung Harbor. It was named Ape Hill by the Dutch in the 17th century to describe many Formosan rock macaques on this mountain. It is also called Chaishan (柴山) and includes the Snake Hill (蛇山 - a 17th-century term) in its northern part, and Long Life Hill named by Japanese in 1911-1915 for the crown-prince Hirohito in the southern part. In some old maps, the peak of the hill is called Saracen's Head. Now it is a nature park where biological diversity can be seen. Amphibious Reconnaissance And Patrol Unit
The Amphibious Reconnaissance and Patrol Unit (ARP) (); not to be confused with the other commando frogmen unit within the Republic of China Armed Forces (ROCAF)/(Taiwan); being the 101st Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion of the Republic of China Army (ROCA), is a special operations force of the Republic of China Marine Corps (ROCMC). Overview ARP members are known as commando frogmen and sharing the same "frogman" moniker they are often compared with the United States Navy SEALs, Navy SEALs. However, unlike the Navy SEALs who are under the United States Navy (USN) (and thus, more akin to South Korea's Republic of Korea Navy Special Warfare Flotilla, ROKN UDT/SEALs), the ARP are under the ROCMC with each member of the ARP being a ROC marines.
