Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the program at the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball. The Volleyball at the 1972 Summer Olympics, 1972 Women's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was the 3rd edition of the event, organized by the world's governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, FIVB in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee, IOC. The 1972 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XX Olympiad () and officially branded as Munich 1972 (; ), were an international multi-sport event held in Munich, West Germany, from 26 August to 11 September 1972.
