While fossil fuels still dominate, generating 88% of the country's electricity in 2023, hydropower contributes 7%, and wind and solar account for 5%, a rise from 1% in 2015 but still below the global average of 13% and Africa’s 6%. Egypt remains Africa’s largest producer of gas-fired electricity, accounting for 45% of the continent’s total in 2022. Despite its reliance on fossil fuels, Egypt’s per capita carbon emissions remain below the global average.
