Zeynep Çelik-Butler
Zeynep Çelik-Butler (also known as Zeynep Çelik) is a Turkish- American professor of electrical engineering at the Nanotechnology Research and Teaching Facility within the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. She is an IEEE Fellow and a life member of Eta Kappa Nu. Biography Çelik-Butler received a BS in physics from Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1982. Coming to the United States, she received a 1984 MS in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester in New York in 1984, and then a PhD in electrical engineering in 1987, also from Rochester. Research The research activities in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) started in the early 1990s with the development of new materials for microbolometers for room-temperature infrared detection. Turkish Women In Academics
Turkish women in academics refers to Turkish women who make scientific research or teach in the universities in Turkey and abroad. Background During the Ottoman Empire era women had no chance to teach in the universities except for the very last years of the empire when Committee of Union and Progress (İttihat ve Terakki Partisi) came to power. The first Turkish woman who was able to teach in Istanbul University (then known as Darülfunun) was Halide Edib (later Halide Edib Adıvar) in 1918. But Halide Edib chose to join the nationalist forces of Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk) in Anatolia rather than to stay in Istanbul. During the Republican era the number of academics increased. Burst noise is a type of electronic noise that occurs in semiconductors and ultra-thin gate oxide films. It is also called random telegraph noise (RTN), popcorn noise, impulse noise, bi-stable noise, or random telegraph signal (RTS) noise. A sensor array is a group of sensors, usually deployed in a certain geometry pattern, used for collecting and processing electromagnetic or acoustic signals. The advantage of using a sensor array over using a single sensor lies in the fact that an array adds new dimensions to the observation, helping to estimate more parameters and improve the estimation performance. For example an array of radio antenna elements used for beamforming can increase antenna gain in the direction of the signal while decreasing the gain in other directions, i.e., increasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by amplifying the signal coherently. Microbolometers
A microbolometer is a specific type of bolometer used as a detector in a thermal camera. Infrared radiation with wavelengths between 7.5–14 μm strikes the detector material, heating it, and thus changing its electrical resistance. This resistance change is measured and processed into temperatures which can be used to create an image. Unlike other types of infrared detecting equipment, microbolometers do not require cooling. Theory of construction A microbolometer is an uncooled thermal sensor. High resolution thermal sensors require exotic and expensive cooling methods including stirling cycle coolers and liquid nitrogen coolers.
