Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak
Zdzisław Ludwik Krzyszkowiak (; 3 August 1929 – 24 March 2003) was a Polish track and field athlete, winner of the 3000 metre steeplechase at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Born in Wielichowo, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Krzyszkowiak won 13 Polish National Championship titles in long-distance and cross-country events. Krzyszkowiak rose to the international athletics scene at the 1956 Summer Olympics, where he missed the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres by 7.4 seconds, finishing fourth. At the 1958 European Championships in Athletics, Krzyszkowiak established himself as one of the best European long-distance runners by winning both the 5000 metres, 5000 and 10,000 metres. Wielichowo
Wielichowo is a town in Grodzisk Wielkopolski County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, in western Poland, with 1,746 inhabitants (2010). History Wielichowo was granted town rights in 1429 by King Władysław II Jagiełło. It was a private church town, administratively located in the Kościan County in the Poznań Voivodeship in the Greater Poland Province of the Kingdom of Poland. According to the 1921 Polish census, the population was 97.4% Polish. Following the joint German-Soviet invasion of Poland, which started World War II in September 1939, the town was occupied by Germany until 1945. Gaston Roelants
Gaston, Baron Roelants (born 5 February 1937), is a Belgian former elite steeplechaser and cross country runner. He won the 1962 European and 1964 Olympic titles in the 3000 m steeplechase and twice broke the world record. Biography Roelants finished fourth in the steeplechase at the 1960 Olympics, and after winning a bronze medal at the 1966 European Championships he successfully turned to longer distances, setting world records in the 20 km (58 minutes 6.2 seconds) and in the 1 hour race (20,664 m) that year. Steeplechase (athletics)
The steeplechase is an obstacle race in Sport of athletics, athletics which derives its name from the Steeplechase (horse racing), steeplechase in horse racing. The foremost version of the event is the 3000 metres steeplechase. The 2000 metres steeplechase is the next most common distance. In youth athletics, a distance of 1000 metres is occasionally used for steeplechase races. History Steeple chasing was originally a horse riding event that grew out of hunting with dogs. Jerzy Chromik (15 June 1931 in Mysłowice – 21 October 1987 in Katowice) was a foremost long-distance runner from Poland.
