Zaynê Akyol
Zaynê Akyol (born in 1987 in Turkey) is a Canadian filmmaker, producer and photographer. She predominantly focuses on documentary film and is known for her feature-length documentary film ''Gulîstan, Land of Roses '' (2016), which was supported by the National Film Board (NFB) and MitosFilm in Germany. Early life and education Zaynê Akyol was born in a village in Turkey during 1987 to Kurdish parents. The Kurdish army would frequently visit her village and Akyol has described the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) as being "part of my environment from a very early age". Gulîstan, Land Of Roses
''Gulîstan, Land of Roses'' (French title: ''Gulîstan, terre de roses'') is a 2016 feature-length documentary film about women guerillas in a Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) Free Women's Units, Free Women's Unit, in combat against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), directed by the Kurdish Montreal filmmaker Zaynê Akyol. Shot in Iraqi Kurdistan, the film is co-produced by Montreal's Périphéria Productions, Germany's Mehmet Aktaş, MitosFilm and the National Film Board of Canada. The film was conceived and named for a woman, Gulîstan, who had been a role model for the director in her adopted home in Montreal, until she left to fight with the PKK. The Peshmerga () are the internal security forces of Kurdistan Region. According to the Constitution of Iraq, regional governments are responsible for "the establishment and organization of the internal security forces for the region such as police, security forces, and guards of the region".
