Yukon (electoral District)
Yukon is a federal electoral district covering the entire territory of Yukon, Canada. It has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1902 to 1949 and since 1953. The City of Whitehorse comprises an overwhelmingly large portion of the electorate and thus elections are fought on a comparatively small area. Riding Association
An electoral district association (french: association de circonscription enregistrée), commonly known as a riding association (french: association de comté) or constituency association, is the basic unit of a political party at the level of the electoral district (" riding") in Canadian politics. Major political parties attempt to have a riding association in each constituency, although usually these associations are more active in ridings where the party has an elected Member of Parliament or has a reasonable chance of electing an MP in the future, and less active in ridings where the party's prospects have historically been poor. Most riding associations have an elected executive and attempt to have activities for local party members at regular intervals. Ron Veale
Ronald Stuart Veale is a Canadian jurist and former politician, who represented the electoral district of Riverdale South in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1981 to 1982. He was a member of the Yukon Liberal Party, and the party's leader from 1981 to 1984. Veale assumed the leadership of the Yukon Liberal Party in 1981 after the resignation of Iain MacKay, also running in and winning a by-election on March 9, 1981, to succeed MacKay as MLA for Riverdale South. Under his leadership, however, the party was entirely shut out of the legislature in the 1982 election. Veale resigned the party leadership in 1984, and was succeeded by Roger Coles. He subsequently returned to his law practice. He was later appointed to the Supreme Court of Yukon, of which he was the Chief Justice until his retirement in July 2020. Erik Nielsen
Erik Hersholt Nielsen (February 24, 1924 – September 4, 2008) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He served as the longtime Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Yukon, and was Leader of the Opposition and the third deputy prime minister. He was the elder brother of actor Leslie Nielsen. Early life, family, and education Nielsen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, the eldest of three boys. His mother, Mabel Elizabeth (née Davies), was an immigrant from Wales, and his father, Ingvard Eversen Nielsen (1900-1975), was a Danish-born constable in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Nielsen's family lived mainly in Alberta during his formative years, and he graduated from high school in Edmonton in 1942. Audrey McLaughlin
Audrey Marlene McLaughlin (née Brown; born November 8, 1936) is a Canadian politician and former leader of the New Democratic Party from 1989 to 1995. She was the first female leader of a political party with representation in the House of Commons of Canada, as well as the first federal political party leader to represent an electoral district in a Canadian territory. Life and career McLaughlin was born Audrey Marlene Brown in Dutton, Ontario, the daughter of Margaret Clark and William Brown, of Scottish and English descent. She worked as a social worker in Toronto, Ontario, and in Ghana. Don Branigan
Donald W. Branigan (1933 – June 27, 1999) was a Canadian politician and medical doctor, best known as a former mayor of Whitehorse, Yukon. As a medical doctor, he was also noted for his frequent legal conflicts with medical licensing bodies opposed to his use of holistic medical practices such as acupuncture. John Kenneth McKinnon
John Kenneth McKinnon (April 20, 1936 – March 13, 2019) was a Canadian politician and the commissioner of Yukon from 1986 to 1995. Early life The son of Alex McKinnon and Catherine Luce, he was educated in Norwood, at St. Paul's College and at the University of Manitoba. McKinnon married Judy S. Chenley. He was vice-president and general manager of Northern Television Services. McKinnon was a Member of the Yukon Territorial Council from 1961 to 1964 and from 1967 to 1974. McKinnon was then appointed Minister of Local Government in 1974, Minister of Highways and Public Works in 1976. He was then Yukon Administrator of the Northern Pipeline Agency from 1979 to 1984 and appointed Commissioner March 27, 1986 then retired in June 1995. Jim Kenyon is a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Porter Creek North in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2011. He is a member of the Yukon Party. John Streicker is a Canadian artist and politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon in the 2016 Yukon general election. Darrell Pasloski
Darrell Thomas Pasloski (born December 2, 1960) is a territorial politician from Yukon, Canada, who was leader of the Yukon Party, and served as the eighth premier of Yukon from 2011 to 2016. His party was defeated in the general election of November, 2016, and he lost his own seat. He was succeeded by Sandy Silver as Premier of Yukon on December 3, 2016. Lawrence Bagnell (born December 19, 1949) is a former Canadian politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding of Yukon from 2000 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2021.
