Yrjö Kokko
Yrjö Olavi Samuli Kokko (16 October 1903 in Sortavala – 6 September 1977 in Helsinki) was a Finnish writer and veterinarian. He wrote more than 20 books, among them '' Pessi and Illusia'' (''Pessi ja Illusia'', 1944), ''Singing Swan of fate Bird'' (''Laulujoutsen'', 1954), ''The Way of the Four Winds'' (''Neljän tuulen tie'', 1954) and ''Ungelon Torppa'' (1958). Yrjö Kokko wrote his first book during the heroic Finnish-Russian Winter War, where he volunteered. It is during that time on the war front that he wrote his most famous work ''Pessi and Illusia''. Kokko was a specialist of wild life, namely birds. He made countless expeditions in Lapland, living among the Lappish people or Sámi, which he knew like few others at that time. His advocacy for Lappish people was more a cultural than a political one. Kokko was unfavorable of fast developing mass-tourism in Lappland. Sortavala
Sortavala (; Finnish language, Finnish and ; ), previously known as Serdobol () until 1918, is a types of inhabited localities in Russia, town in the Republic of Karelia, Russia, located at the northern tip of Lake Ladoga near the Finland, Finnish border, west of Petrozavodsk, the capital city of the Republic of Karelia. Pessi And Illusia (book)
''Pessi and Illusia'' ( Finnish: ''Pessi ja Illusia'') is a Finnish fairytale written by Yrjö Kokko and first published in 1944 by WSOY. Background Kokko was a veterinarian, serving as a veterinary officer in the Finnish Army on the Karelian Isthmus during the Continuation War between Finland and Soviet Union. In late 1941, while missing his children back home, he decided to write them a short Christmas story. As soon as the story was finished, however, he set about expanding it into a more substantial fairytale; he also illustrated the work with nature photos which he took himself. The entire creative process took three years. Kokko had been interested in and fascinated by nature since he was a child, and felt that he could instinctively empathise with plants and animals and understand their 'language'. Winter War
The Winter War was a war between the Soviet Union and Finland. It began with a Soviet invasion of Finland on 30 November 1939, three months after the outbreak of World War II, and ended three and a half months later with the Moscow Peace Treaty on 13 March 1940. Despite superior military strength, especially in tanks and aircraft, the Soviet Union suffered severe losses and initially made little headway. The League of Nations deemed the attack illegal and expelled the Soviet Union from its organization. Enontekiö
Enontekiö (; ; ; ; ) is a municipality in the Finnish part of Lapland with approximately inhabitants. It is situated in the outermost northwest of the country and occupies a large and very sparsely populated area of about between the Swedish and Norwegian border. Finland's highest point, the Halti fell, with a height of above the mean sea level, is situated in the north of Enontekiö.
