Youth For Lateral Kindness
Youth for Lateral Kindness is a community organization based in Canada, founded by Teagyn Vallevand and Aurora Hardy, that is working to address problems of lateral violence within indigenous communities, and informing the general public about native history that is often neglected in school curriculum. Lateral violence has been defined as displaced anger, aggression, and hatred toward ones community and self, rather than those who are causing harm. The organization's purpose is to minimize lateral violence caused by colonization and structural oppression. Lateral Violence
Lateral violence is displaced violence; that is anger and rage is directed towards members within a marginalised or oppressed community rather than towards the oppressors of the community – one's peers rather than adversaries. Developed by scholars within the global indigenous first people's community, this construct is one way of explaining minority-on-minority violence occurring within marginalized and oppressed communities. It is a cycle of abuse and its roots lie in factors such as: colonisation, oppression, intergenerational trauma and the ongoing experiences of racism and discrimination. Those experiencing and those committing lateral violence more likely to be involved in crime in the United States, the United Kingdom. Kwanlin Dün First Nation
The Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) or Kwänlin Dän kwächʼǟn (″Whitehorse People″) is located in and around Whitehorse in Yukon, Canada. The Kwanlin Dün is the largest First Nation in Yukon. Internalized Racism
In social justice studies, internalized racism is a form of internalized oppression, defined by sociologist Karen D. Pyke as the " internalization of racial oppression by the racially subordinated." In her study ''The Psychology of Racism, '' Robin Nicole Johnson emphasizes that internalized racism involves both "conscious and unconsious acceptance of a racial hierarchy in which a presumed superior race are consistently ranked above other races. These definitions encompass a wide range of instances, including, but not limited to, belief in negative stereotypes, adaptations to cultural standards, and thinking that supports the status quo (i.e. denying that racism exists). The word, youth, can also mean the time between childhood and adulthood ( maturity), but it can also refer to one's peak, in terms of health or the period of life known as being a young adult. Youth is also defined as "the appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit, etc., characteristic of one, who is young". Its definitions of a specific age range varies, as youth is not defined chronologically as a stage that can be tied to specific age ranges; nor can its end point be linked to specific activities, such as taking unpaid work, or having sexual relations. Youth is an experience that may shape an individual's level of dependency, which can be marked in various ways according to different cultural perspectives.
