Yorketown, South Australia
Yorketown is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the southern Yorke Peninsula about west of the state capital of Adelaide and about south of the municipal seat of Maitland. At the 2016 census, the locality had a population of 969 of which 642 lived in its town centre. History Yorketown began as a private sub-division in section 85 of the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Melville in 1872. Its name was declared by the Surveyor General of South Australia as an official place name on 16 November 1995. Boundaries were created for the locality which was given the "long established name" of Yorketown on 27 May 1999. The area associated with Yorketown is known as ''Garrdinya'' by the Narungga, the aboriginal people of the Yorke Peninsula. Its boundaries were created in May 1999. The name derives from the former government town of Honiton which was proclaimed on 27 April 1876, which ceased on 26 September 1982 and whose site is within the locality’s extent. The former government town’s name itself is reported as being derived from Honiton, a town located in Devonshire, England. Honiton’s coastal boundary with Investigator Strait includes coastal features such as Troubridge Hill and Troubridge Point. ''The Pioneer'' was a weekly newspaper published in Yorketown, South Australia from March 1898 until June 1969, when it absorbed the ''Maitland Watch'' and was renamed to ''Yorke Peninsula News Pictorial''. For thirty years an opposition newspaper, the ''Clarion'' (7 June 1902 - 21 May 1931), existed in the town too. History ''The Southern Yorke's Peninsula Pioneer'' was first published on 21 January 1898, and sold at a discounted price due to its late appearance. It was originally owned and established by Ben L. Wilkinson, and later helped by his brother Richard, in Yorketown. In Issue 10, on 25 March that year, the newspaper adopted a simpler title, ''The Pioneer.'' Electoral District Of Narungga
Narungga is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It was created by the redistribution of 2016, and was contested for the first time at the 2018 state election. It is named for the Narungga people who are the traditional owners of the lands in most of the electorate. It is one of two state districts named after South Australia's indigenous people (the other being the electoral district of Kaurna). Description Narungga is essentially a reconfigured version of the former seat of Goyder, which itself was created in 1969 as a replacement for Yorke Peninsula. At its creation, it drew 21,993 electors from Goyder and 2,325 from Frome. Of the remaining electors from Goyder, 999 were lost to Frome, 422 to Schubert, and 1,619 to Taylor. Narungga
The Narungga people, also spelt Narangga, are a group of Aboriginal Australians whose traditional lands are located throughout Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. Their traditional language, one of the Yura-Thura grouping, is Narungga. Country In Norman Tindale's estimation the Narungga held some of tribal land on the Yorke Peninsula, running north as far as Port Broughton. Their eastern limits were around the Hummock Range. The following places all lay within Narungga tribal territory - Bute, Wallaroo, Ardrossan, Marion Bay, and Cape Spencer. Their borders with the Kaurna lay at the head of Gulf St Vincent. Hundred Of Melville
The Hundred of Melville is a cadastral unit of hundred in South Australia on the southern Yorke Peninsula. It is one of the 16 hundreds of the County of Fergusson. Proclaimed on 18 February June 1869, it was named after Lord Melville, First Lord of the Admiralty (chief of the Royal Navy) in the 1810s and 1820s. The localities of Coobowie, Edithburgh, Honiton, Sultana Point and parts of Port Moorowie, Wool Bay and Yorketown are within the hundred boundaries. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. Yorke Peninsula
The Yorke Peninsula is a peninsula located northwest and west of Adelaide in South Australia, between Spencer Gulf on the west and Gulf St Vincent on the east. The peninsula is separated from Kangaroo Island to the south by Investigator Strait. The most populous town in the region is Kadina.
