Parish Grove Township, Benton County, Indiana
Parish Grove Township is one of eleven townships in Benton County, Indiana. As of the 2020 census, its population was 185 and it contained 89 housing units. It contains the unincorporated town of Freeland Park. History Parish Grove Township was one of the county's original three created in 1840. The grove for which it is named grew close to the township's southeastern corner, near what is now the intersection of county roads 400 West and 300 South. It originally covered about and contained an abundant variety of trees, including oaks, walnuts, hickory, dogwood, haw, paw paw, sycamore, quaking ash, ironwood, water beach, elm, linn, poplar, ash, sassafras, locust, etc. As late as 1924 there were 37 varieties growing in the grove. Parish Grove was home to a group of local Pottawatomie Indians led by Chief Parish (real name Pierre Moran), the son of French trader Constant Moran and a Kickapoo woman. Sheff, Indiana
Sheff is an extinct town in York Township, Benton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. History Sheff was the site of an interlocking tower that controlled the crossing of the New York Central (NYC) railroad and the NYC subsidiary, Big Four (CCC&StL) railroad. The town derives its name from a vice president of the Big Four. It was satirically located at the top of the last glaciations terminal moraine. The North South line was built in 1906 under the name Chicago, Indiana, & Southern. There was a large transfer yard located north of the interlocking. At one point the town contained a YMCA, a roundhouse, a restaurant, and several houses. The 1906 date fits the draining of Beaver Lake north of Morocco, Indiana across which bead the line was built. 1906 was significant as these rail lines fed coal north to the massive steel mills being built at Indiana Harbor and Gary, Indiana. Raub, Indiana
Raub is an unincorporated community in York Township, Benton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is part of the Lafayette, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Raub was laid out by merchant and livestock-dealer Adams D. Raub on April 8, 1872 near the railroad which had been completed through the area the previous year. Originally consisting of 71 lots, its first house was that of Ira Perkins (which predated the railroad), followed by that of A. Houser in the fall of 1871. At about the same time, Raub gained its first store, a business selling groceries and notions, and in 1873 got a general store operated by Samuel White. A hardware store, drug store, saloon, doctor's office, grain elevator, blacksmith, and various other establishments followed over the next decade. A post office was established at Raub in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1967.
