Yong Nyuk Lin
Yong Nyuk Lin ( zh, s=杨玉麟, p=Yáng Yùlín; 24 June 1918 – 29 June 2012) was a Singaporean former politician who served as the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts (Singapore), Minister for Communications between 1968 and 1975, Minister for Health (Singapore), Minister for Health between 1963 and 1968, and Ministry of Education (Singapore), Minister for Education between 1959 and 1963. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was the Parliament of Singapore, Member of Parliament (MP) representing Geylang West Single Member Constituency, Geylang West SMC between 1959 and 1979. Yong also served as Singapore's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom between 1975 and 1977. United People's Party (Singapore)
The United People's Party (abbreviation: UPP) was a political party in Singapore, formed by former People's Action Party (PAP) leader Ong Eng Guan. UPP was registered on 14 July 1961. The party fielded 46 candidates to contest the 51 seats in the legislative assembly in the 1963 general election. Ong won the Hong Lim seat with 44.5% majority votes, that was lower than the over 70% he received during the 1959 election under the PAP, and 1961 election as an independent candidate. Barisan Sosialis
Barisan Sosialis (BS), also known as the Socialist Front, is a defunct left-wing political party in Singapore. It was formed on 29 July 1961 and was officially registered on 13 August 1961 by the leftist faction of the People's Action Party (PAP) who had been expelled under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew. The prominent founding members of BS were Lee Siew Choh and Lim Chin Siong. It was one of the biggest opposition parties in Singapore during the 1960s. The main objectives of BS, in its own words, were "eradicating colonialism", establishing a "united independent and democratic Malayan nation" comprising the Federation of Malaya and Singapore and "introducing an economic system to promote prosperity and stability in society." 1963 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 21 September 1963, five days after Singapore became part of Malaysia. Voters elected all 51 members (MLAs) of the Legislative Assembly. The elections were the only ones to date with no boundary changes to any existing constituencies prior to the elections. The result was a victory for the People's Action Party (PAP), which won 37 of the 51 seats, while the majority of the remaining seats were won by Barisan Sosialis (BS). The ruling federal government of Malaysia, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), contested the elections as part of the Singapore Alliance Party (SAP) in an attempt to oust the PAP, straining relations between the two parties. The Singapore People's Alliance (abbreviation: SPA) was a political alliance in Singapore founded in 1958, consisting of the Liberal Socialist Party (LSP) and former members of the Labour Front (LF). It contested the 1959 general election and became the opposition; and the 1963 general election under the Singapore Alliance Party (SAP) in which it failed to win any seats. History SPA was led by the former Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock to contest the 1959 general election. SPA wanted to promote the standard of living for workers through socialist and welfare programmes. 1959 Singaporean General Election
The 1959 Singaporean general election was held on 30 May 1959 to elect all 51 seats to the Legislative Assembly of Singapore. It was the first general election after Singapore was granted full internal self-government from Britain, excluding matters of defence and foreign affairs. Prior to the election, the constitution was revised, known as the Singapore (Constitution) Order in Council 1958. Along with a wholly elected Legislative Assembly, it also created the position of the '' Yang di-Pertuan Negara'' as head of state and a Prime Minister as head of government.
