Yonabaru Ryōgi
is a List of towns in Japan, town in Shimajiri District, Okinawa, Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. It is located at the southern end of Okinawa Island, on the east coast, overlooking Nakagusuku Bay. As of 2024, the town has a population of 19,817 and a population density of 3,825 persons per km2. The total area is 5.18 km2, making it the second smallest municipality in Okinawa. Tonaki
is a village located in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The village consists of Tonaki Island and the uninhabited Irisuna Island. As of 2020, the village has an estimated population of 334 and a density of 89 persons per km2. The total area is . The highest point in Tonaki is on Tonaki Island at . Tonaki is located approximately northwest of the prefectural capital of Naha. The village is accessible by regular ferry service from Tomari Port in Naha. Shō Hashi
Shō Hashi (1372–1439) was a king of Chūzan, one of Sanzan period, three tributary states to China on the western Pacific island of Okinawa Island, Okinawa. He is traditionally described as the unifier of Okinawa and the founder of the Ryukyu Kingdom. He was the son of the lord Shishō of the First Shō dynasty. Modern scholarship has connected Shishō's potential father, Samekawa, to a family of Southern Court-affiliated seafarers from the island of Kyushu, where Hashi was possibly born. Hashi became the lord of Sashiki Castle in southern Okinawa in 1392, becoming a noted military leader. In 1407, following a diplomatic incident between the Chūzan king Bunei and the Ming dynasty court, Shishō took the throne, attributed by the Ryukyuan official histories to a coup d'état by Hashi to install his father as king. Chūzan Seifu
was an official history of the Ryūkyū Kingdom compiled between 1697 and 1701 by a group of scholar-officials led by Sai Taku. It was a continuation of the '' Chūzan Seikan''. It is composed of 19 volumes, one of which is devoted to correspondence between the kingdom and the Satsuma Domain. Omoro Sōshi
The is a compilation of ancient poems and songs from Okinawa and the Amami Islands, collected into 22 volumes and written primarily in hiragana with some simple kanji. There are 1,553 poems in the collection, but many are repeated; the number of unique pieces is 1,144. The hiragana used, however, is a traditional orthography which associates different sounds to the characters than their normal Japanese readings, due to it originally being based on an earlier stage of Northern Ryukyuan that has not yet undergone vowel raising characteristic of the modern languages. The characters used to write ''omoro'', for example (おもろ), would be written this same way, but pronounced as ''umuru'' in Okinawan. Nanjō
is a city located in the southern part of Okinawa Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Translated literally, the name Nanjō means "southern castle". Many castle ruins, called gusuku in the Okinawan language, can be found throughout the city. The modern city of Nanjō was established on January 1, 2006, from the merger of the town of Sashiki, and the villages of Chinen, Ōzato and Tamagusuku (all from Shimajiri District). Nanjō has an area of 49.94 km² and, on the date of its inception, a population of 46,690, and a density of 934.92 per km². Of the eleven cities in Okinawa Prefecture, Nanjō has the smallest population. It does not have a separate police station nor a high school. Haebaru, Okinawa
is a town located in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 2016, the town has an estimated population of 37,874 and a density of 3,500 persons per km2. The total area is 10.72 km2. It is one of the only landlocked towns in Okinawa, but its central location ensures traffic and business remain healthy. Haebaru is located in the south of Okinawa Island directly southeast of the prefectural capital of Naha.
