Yiannis Kouros
Yiannis Kouros (, ; born 13 February 1956 in Tripoli, Kingdom of Greece) is a Greek ultramarathon runner based in Greece. Kouros holds or formerly held many world records between 100 miles and 1,000 miles. In 1991, he starred as Pheidippides in the movie ''The Story of the Marathon: A Hero's Journey'', which chronicles the history of marathon running. Kouros came to prominence when he won the Spartathlon in 1984 in a record time of 20 hours and 25 minutes. He also won the Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon in 1985 in a record time of 5 days, 5 hours, 7 minutes, and 6 seconds, beating the previous record held by Cliff Young. Kouros held Australian citizenship for part of his running career and was inducted into the Australian Ultra Runners Association's Hall of Fame in 2019. Multiday races are ultramarathon running events which are typically either segmented into daily events of a specified distance or time, or staged so that runners can run as far as they want, at their own discretion, over a set course or over a set number of days. Multiday races can range from continuous 48-hour track events to staged transcontinental treks. Cliff Young (athlete)
Albert Ernest Clifford Young Medal of the Order of Australia, OAM (8 February 19222 November 2003) was an Australian athlete from Beech Forest, Victoria. A farmer, he became notable for his unexpected win of the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon in 1983 at 61 years of age. Early life Young was born the eldest son and the third of seven children of Mary and Albert Ernest Young on 8 February 1922. He grew up on a farm in Beech Forest in southwestern Victoria. The family farm was approximately with approximately 2,000 sheep. Pheidippides
Pheidippides (, , ) or Philippides () is the central figure in the story that inspired the marathon race. Pheidippides is said to have run from Marathon to Athens to deliver news of the victory of the Battle of Marathon, and, according to Herodotus, to have run from Athens to Sparta. This latter feat also inspired two ultramarathon races, the Spartathlon and Authentic Pheidippides Run. Name The name Philippides is reported by Pausanias, Plutarch, and Lucian, writers who had read this name in their versions of Herodotus, while in most of Herodotus's manuscripts the form appears Pheidippides. Other than Herodotus's manuscripts, the form Pheidippides is only attested in Aristophanes's '' The Clouds'' (423 BC).
