Yantra River
The Yantra ( ) is a river in northern Bulgaria, a right tributary of the Danube. Reaching a length of 285 km, it is the seventh longest river in Bulgaria and the third longest Bulgarian tributary of the Danube. In the middle and lower course, the Yantra takes many turns forming numerous gorges. It has a high sinuosity index of 3.1, which is characteristic for meandering rivers. Its catchment spans a territory of 7,862 km2 and has a small mean slope value 4.6‰ with a mean altitude of 470 m. The city of Veliko Tarnovo, situated on several hills overlooking the river along its middle course, served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 12–14th centuries, and remains and important cultural, economic and tourist center in Bulgaria. Another major city on the river is Gabrovo, an early education and industrial hub of the country. Belenski Most
The Belenski most (Беленски мост) or Byala Bridge is an arch bridge over the Yantra River in northern Bulgaria, 1 km from the town of Byala in Ruse Province, whose name it carries. It is regarded as one of the prominent achievements of Bulgarian National Revival engineering and architecture. The bridge was constructed between 1865 and 1867 by Bulgarian architect and master builder Kolyu Ficheto on the order of Turkish statesman Midhat Pasha, when Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman Empire. While other architects were willing to build it for 2 to 3 million groschen, Kolyu Ficheto was willing to build it for 700 thousand. When asked to confirm this sum, he replied that Midhat Pasha could take his head if he didn't succeed doing it for this sum. It is 276 m long and 6 m wide, has 14 arches each with a clearance of 12 m and decorated with relief images of animals. Dolna Oryahovitsa
Dolna Oryahovitsa ( ) is a town in northern Bulgaria, part of Gorna Oryahovitsa municipality, Veliko Tarnovo Province. Geography Dolna Oryahovitsa is situated on the coast of Yantra River, 10 kilometers South from Veliko Tarnovo, 3 kilometers north from Gorna Oryahovitsa, and 250 kilometers east from Bulgaria's capital Sofia. The climate in the area is warm during the summer, whereas the winters are cold. History The name of Dolna Oryahovitsa is mentioned in Turkish documents in the end of XVII and XVIII centuries. The town takes place in an old Slavic settlement, which was famous for its fertile agricultural lands. Dolna Oryahovitsa becomes a town in 1985. Rusenski Lom
The Rusenski Lom (, ) is a river in northeastern Bulgaria, the last major right tributary of the Danube. Its length is 55 km but reaches 197 km if its right constituent river the Beli Lom is included. Geography The river is formed by the confluence of two constituent rivers, the Beli Lom (147 km, left) and the Cherni Lom (130 km, right), at an altitude of 47 m some 3.2 km east of the village of Ivanovo, Ruse Province. It flows in direction north–northwest through the Danubian Plain in a deep canyon-like valley cut in Aptian limestones. The Rusenski Lom forms numerous meanders due to its small mean slope of 0.62 m/km. Although the length of the river is 55 km, in straight line the distance between its source and mouth is only 17.6 km. Barata (river)
The Barata () is a river in northern Bulgaria, a right tributary of the Danube. Its length is 39 km. The river takes its source at an altitude of 134 m near the village of Chervena. It flows north through the Danubian Plain (Bulgaria), Danubian Plain in a wide valley. Downstream of the village of Oresh the Barata enters the Svishtov–Belene Plain, where it is bifurcated in two large canals, from which numerous other branch out to the north, west and east. The left canal flow north and northwest and does not reach the Danube. The right canal flows into the Danube at an altitude of 22 m near the railway station of Svishtov. The Barata flows entirely in Veliko Tarnovo Province. There are five settlements along its course, the villages of Chervena, Ovcha Mogila, Dragomirovo, Veliko Tarnovo Province, Dragomirovo and Oresh, as well as the town of Svishtov, all of them in Svishtov Municipality. Osam
The Osam ( ) is a river in northern Bulgaria, a right tributary of the Danube. Its length including the main stem Cherni (Black) Osam is 314 km, making it the fifth longest river in Bulgaria. The river proper, formed by the confluence of the Cherni and Beli (White) Osam, is 278 km. Geography Course The main stem the Cherni Osam is 36 km long and takes its source at an altitude of 1,880 m on the southwestern foothills of the summit of Levski (2,166 m) in the Balkan Mountains and flows north. Vardim Island (, ''ostrov Vardim'') is the third largest Bulgarian Danubian island (after Belene Island and Kozloduy Island). Located east of the town of Svishtov, opposite the village of Vardim (in Svishtov municipality, Veliko Tarnovo Province) and part of the Belene Danubian Archipelago, it is a protected wetland and bird nesting area of national importance. The island lies about north of the Bulgarian bank of the Danube, between the 542nd and 546th kilometre from the origin of the river. Novgrad (, ; also transliterated ''Novgrad'') is a village in the northeastern part of Bulgaria, close to the Bulgaria–Romania border. It is situated in the Ruse Province, and is a part of the Tsenovo Municipality, which lies in the western part the province.
