Yangyang-class Minesweeper
''Yangyang''-class minesweeper (, ) is a ship class of minesweepers currently in service on the Republic of Korea Navy. Its main missions are gathering data of ports in the Korean region, and searching naval mine and minesweeping, in wartime. They sometimes used at finding and recovering North Korean missiles, by using Variable Depth Sonar to detect missile fragments. ''Ongjin'', second ship of the class, is famous for finding the stern of ROKS ''Cheonan'' at the site of the ROKS ''Cheonan'' sinking. History At the Korean War, Korea did not have proper minesweeping equipment, and it was all about pulling naval mines out of fishing nets or blowing up floating mines with light machine guns. A minesweeper is a small warship designed to remove or detonate naval mines. Using various mechanisms intended to counter the threat posed by naval mines, minesweepers keep waterways clear for safe shipping. Dedicated minesweepers, however, only appeared many centuries later during the Crimean War, where they were deployed by the British. The Crimean War minesweepers were rowboats trailing grapnels to snag mines. Minesweeping technology picked up in the Russo-Japanese War, using aging torpedo boats as minesweepers. In Britain, naval leaders recognized before the outbreak of World War I that the development of sea mines was a threat to the nation's shipping and began efforts to counter the threat. Gangwon Province, South Korea
Gangwon Province is a province of South Korea, with its capital at Chuncheon. It is bound on the east by the Sea of Japan, and borders Gyeonggi Province to its west, North Gyeongsang Province and North Chungcheong Province to its south, and the Military Demarcation Line to the north, separating it from North Korea's Kangwŏn Province. Nampo-class Minelayer
Nampo-class minelayer, HDM-4000 or MLS II-class is a new class of anti-submarine warfare minelayers built by Hyundai Heavy Industries for the Republic of Korea Navy. MLS-II Nampo has a length of 114 meters, 17 meters in width and 28 meters in draft for a displacement of 4,000 tons. Its crew complement is 120. KVLS package on top of the helicopter hangar that can deploy K-SAAM surface-to-air missiles. Nampo-class also fitted with two Mark 32 Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes for LIG Nex1 K745 Blue Shark anti-submarine torpedoes. Each ship is protected by two Rheinmetall multi-ammunition softkill systems (MASS) which are installed amidships. The Nampo class is also equipped with two LIG Nex1 SLQ-261K Torpedo Acoustic Counter Measure (TACM) systems. Yangyang County
Yangyang County (''Yangyang-gun'') is in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The county is located in the northeast of the country in Gangwon-do. Its population is about 31,000 (2004). The Yangyang area is well known for its pine mushrooms (''song-i''), its fish—particularly salmon—and its sunrises. Overview In 2002, Yangyang opened its own airport, serving Gangneung to the south and Sokcho to the north. It was intended for the many tourists attracted by the Seorak-san national park. But the airport was closed in 2009 due to a lack of passengers. The county is proud to unite the five major religions of Korea: Confucianism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. Voith Schneider Propeller
The Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) is a specialized marine propulsion system (MPS) manufactured by the Voith Group based on a cyclorotor design. It is highly maneuverable, being able to change the direction of its thrust almost instantaneously. It is widely used on tugs and ferries. Operation From a circular plate, rotating around a vertical axis, a circular array of vertical blades (in the shape of hydrofoils) protrude out of the bottom of the ship. Each blade can rotate itself around a vertical axis. The internal gear changes the angle of attack of the blades in sync with the rotation of the plate, so that each blade can provide thrust in any direction. Unlike the azimuth thruster (where a conventional propeller is rotated about the vertical axis to direct its thrust, allowing a vessel to steer without the use of a rudder), the Voith-Schneider drive merely requires changing the pattern of orientation of the vertical blades.
