Yampa River
The Yampa River flows through northwestern Colorado, United States. Rising in the Rocky Mountains, it is a tributary of the Green River and a major part of the Colorado River system. The Yampa is one of the few free-flowing rivers in the western United States, with only a few small dams and diversions. The name is derived from the Snake Indians word for the Perideridia plant, which has an edible root. John C. Frémont was among the first to record the name 'Yampah' in entries of hijournal from 1843 as he found the plant was particularly abundant in the watershed. Course The headwaters of the Yampa are in the Park Range in Routt County, Colorado as the confluence of the Bear River and Phillips Creek, near the town of Yampa. Perideridia
''Perideridia'' is a genus of plants in the family Apiaceae. Plants in this genus are known generally as yampah or yampa. They are native to western North America. Similar in appearance to other plants of the family Apiaceae, they have umbels of white flowers. Name The genus is based on the Greek word ''perideri'', meaning 'necklace'. Description The plants have a unique appearance for members of the parsley family, and are tall (1–3 feet) and grasslike, with threadlike leaves 1–6 inches long that resemble blades of grass. The plants effectively mimic tall grass and are virtually invisible until they flower, since they tend to grow in grassy meadows, and prefer full sunlight. Like most members of the parsley family, yampah produces umbels of white flowers. The small roots of yampah are about the size of a large unshelled peanut. Uinta Mountains
The Uinta Mountains ( ) are an east-west trending mountain range in northeastern Utah extending a short distance into northwest Colorado and slightly into southwestern Wyoming in the United States. As a subrange of the Rocky Mountains, they are unusual for being the highest range in the contiguous United States running east to west, and lie approximately east of Salt Lake City. The range has peaks ranging from , with the highest point being Kings Peak, also the highest point in Utah. The Mirror Lake Highway crosses the western half of the Uintas on its way to Wyoming. Steamboat Rock (Dinosaur National Monument)
Steamboat Rock, reaching an elevation of 6,074 ft (1,851 m) is a promontory located in the eastern Uinta Mountains, in Moffat County of northwest Colorado, United States. This iconic landmark of Dinosaur National Monument is situated at the confluence of the Green River and Yampa River. Precipitation runoff from this feature drains into the Green River. This geographical formation was originally named "Echo Rock" in John Wesley Powell's 1875 report, ''The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons''. The Steamboat name first appeared on a 1941 United States Geological Survey map of Dinosaur National Monument. Echo Park (Colorado)
Echo Park is a remote river bottom surrounded by canyon walls on the Green River, just downstream from the confluence with the Yampa River and across the stream from the dramatic southern end of Steamboat Rock in Dinosaur National Monument. Description The valley was first mapped and given its name by the Powell Geographic Expedition in 1869. A proposed dam at Echo Park turned into a nationwide environmental controversy in the early 1950s. The Sierra Club and other conservationist groups helped forge a compromise in Congress that eliminated the Echo Park Dam from the Colorado River Storage Project Act of 1956. Moffat County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,292. The county seat is Craig. Stagecoach Dam
Stagecoach Dam is a gravity dam on the Yampa River in Routt County, Colorado, located about south of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Steamboat Springs. Built of roller-compacted concrete, the dam is high and long. The impounded water forms Stagecoach Reservoir, with a storage capacity of and a surface area of at maximum pool. The dam serves for irrigation, municipal water supply, and flood control, and it also supports a hydroelectric power station with a capacity of 800 kilowatts. First proposed in 1983, the dam was completed on August 12, 1989, after just 37 days of construction. The dam and reservoir are owned and operated by the Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District. Flat Tops Wilderness
Flat Tops Wilderness Area is the third largest U.S. Wilderness Area in Colorado. It is , with in Routt National Forest and in White River National Forest. It was designated a wilderness area in 1975. Trappers Lake, located in the north of the area, was the lake that inspired Arthur Carhart, a United States Forest Service official, to plead for wilderness preservation. Description The dominant feature of the Wilderness is the high plateau from which the peaks arise. The plateau forms the northeastern portion of the White River Uplift capped by horizontal basalt flows from tertiary volcanic activity and is bounded by steep drops to valleys carved out by subsequent glaciation.
