Xavier High School, Micronesia
Xavier High School is a private, Catholic coeducational college preparatory school high school run by the US East Province of the Society of Jesus on the island of Weno in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. It was established by the Jesuits in 1952. It was the first high school in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Bishop Thomas Feeney, S.J., D.D. from the New York Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) originally envisioned a minor seminary to train local clergy. Soon after, Xavier Seminary became the first college preparatory school in the Western Pacific. The mission of Xavier High School is to educate students to become competent, conscientious, and compassionate leaders whose lives are guided by the Christian call to service. Weno
Weno, formerly Moen, is an island municipality of Chuuk State of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It is the largest town in the FSM and the capital of Chuuk. It has an estimated area of 20 square kilometers. Population The population was 13,856 at the census taken in 2010. Geography It is located in the Chuuk Lagoon. Its villages are on the coast (Sapuk, Penia, Peniesene, Tunnuk, Mechitiw, Iras, Nantaku, Nepukos, Mwan, Neiwe, and Wichap, Epinup) and serve as the center of commerce. Erhart Aten
Erhart Aten (1932 – November 2004) was a Micronesian politician who served as the first elected Governor of Chuuk State (then called Truk). Aten took office in 1978 after self-government was implemented. He stepped down from office in 1986 after serving two, four-year terms as Governor and was succeeded by Gideon Doone. Aten graduated from Xavier High School, a Jesuit secondary school located on Chuuk, in 1962. Nicole Yamase
Nicole Hokulani Yamase (born c. 1992) is a Micronesian marine biologist. She is the first person from Micronesia to earn a doctorate in marine biology. On March 11, 2021, she became the 20th person to descend to Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point in the Earth's seabed. Though the Challenger Deep is in Micronesia, she is the first Micronesian and first Pacific Islander to make the descent, as well as the fourth woman and the second-youngest person. Nicole Yamase was born in Pohnpei, Micronesia. She attended Xavier High School in Weno, Chuuk. While at the Chaminade University of Honolulu, she studied ornamental fish in Hawaii, especially the yellow tang, and tink frogs in Costa Rica. Joseph John "Joe" Urusemal (born March 19, 1951) is a Micronesian political figure who served as the sixth President of the Federated States of Micronesia from 2003 until 2007. Urusemal is married to former First Lady Olania Latileilam, who is from Satawal. The couple have four children: B.J., Tarsis, Craig and Elenita. David Kabua (born 1951) is a Marshallese politician who served as President of the Marshall Islands from 2020 to 2024. He has represented Wotho Atoll in the Legislature of the Marshall Islands since 2008 and served terms as Minister of Health and Internal Affairs. Early life Kabua was born in Majuro in 1951 as the fourth child and second son of the first President of the Marshall Islands, Amata Kabua, and his wife, former First Lady Emlain Kabua. The Senate of Palau is the upper house of the Palau National Congress (''Olbiil era Kelulau''). The Senate has 13 members serving four-year terms in multi-seat constituencies. Since January 2025, the Senate has 15 members. No political parties exist. The most recent election was held in November 2024. Peter Lawrence Naoya Sugiyama (19 April 1943–10 June 2007) was a Palauan politician. Personal life Sugiyama's father was a Japanese immigrant. He moved to Koror in 1914 at the invitation of his uncle, after the Japanese Empire seized control of the islands as part of its World War I invasion of German New Guinea (which control would later be formalised by the League of Nations as the South Seas Mandate). Emanuel "Manny" Mori (born December 25, 1949) is a Micronesian politician who served as President of the Federated States of Micronesia from 11 May 2007 to 11 May 2015.
