Wisconsin Valley Library Service
The Wisconsin Valley Library Service (WVLS) is a library system made up of 25 public libraries and hundreds of non-public libraries across seven counties in north-central Wisconsin. These include the counties of Clark, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Oneida, and Taylor. The WVLS offices are located in the headquarters of the Marathon County Public Library in Wausau, Wisconsin. Overview The Wisconsin Valley Library Service is one of 15 library systems in Wisconsin. It provides library services to residents of the system area, such as interlibrary loan and reference referrals, in-service training programs, and professional advisory services. Administration WVLS operates under Chapter 43 of the Wisconsin State Statutes and is governed by a 15-member Board of Trustees. Each participating county has at least one member on the board. Clark County, Wisconsin
Clark County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 34,659. Its county seat is Neillsville. History By the early 1800s, the land and streams that are now Clark County were the hunting grounds of Chippewa, Dakota, Ho-Chunk and possibly Menominee peoples. In 1836 these Indians were joined by a party of French-Canadian fur traders who started a temporary post for the American Fur Company on the Black River's East Fork. The next White arrival was probably Mormon loggers in 1844, come to cut pine logs from the forests along the Black River and float them down to a sawmill at Black River Falls. From there the sawed wood would be floated down the river to be used in construction of the Mormon temple in Nauvoo, Illinois. They had camps on the river at what is called Mormon Riffle, a mile below Neillsville, near Weston's Rapids, and south of Greenwood. Loyal is a city in Clark County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,261 at the 2010 census. The city is located within the Town of Loyal, though it is politically independent. Its name comes from the 1860s, when so many of its patriotic pioneers went to fight in the Civil War.
