Wing Commander (computer Game)
''Wing Commander'' is the first game in Chris Roberts' space flight simulation ''Wing Commander'' franchise'' by Origin Systems. The game was first released for MS-DOS on September 26, 1990 and was later ported to the Amiga, CD32 ( 256-color), Sega CD and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and re-released for the PC as ''Wing Commander I'' in 1994. An enhanced remake ''Super Wing Commander'' was made for the 3DO in 1994, and later ported to the Macintosh. Two expansion packs for the game were released: ''Wing Commander: The Secret Missions'' in November 1990 and ''Wing Commander: The Secret Missions 2: Crusade'' in March 1991. Origin Systems, Inc. was an American video game developer based in Austin, Texas. It was founded on March 3, 1983, by Richard Garriott and his brother Robert Garriott, Robert. Origin is best known for their groundbreaking work in multiple genres of video games, such as the ''Ultima (series), Ultima'' and ''Wing Commander (franchise), Wing Commander'' series. Laurence van Cott Niven (; born April 30, 1938) is an American science fiction writer. His best-known works are ''Ringworld'' (1970), which received Hugo, Locus, Ditmar, and Nebula awards, and, with Jerry Pournelle, ''The Mote in God's Eye'' (1974) and ''Lucifer's Hammer'' (1977). The Kzinti (singular Kzin) are a fictional, warlike and bloodthirsty race of cat-like aliens in Larry Niven's ''Known Space'' series. The Kzinti were initially introduced in Niven's story "The Warriors" (originally in ''Worlds of If'' (1966), collected in ''Tales of Known Space'' (1975)) and "The Soft Weapon" (1967), collected in ''Neutron Star'' (1968). Felidae () is the family of mammals in the order Carnivora colloquially referred to as cats, and constitutes a clade. A member of this family is also called a felid (). ''Wing Commander'' is a media franchise consisting of space combat simulation video games from Origin Systems, Inc., an animated television series, a feature film, a collectible card game, a series of novels, and action figures. The franchise originated in 1990 with the release of video game ''Wing Commander''. Setting and gameplay Set in the 27th century, the games tell the story of humanity's war against the Kilrathi, an alien species of large feline bipeds. The Kilrathi are native to the planet Kilrah with their society depicted as an empire. Physically they are bipeds who strongly resemble big cats: they have leonine manes, but also have markings which distinguish their clan of origin. The species is featured in every game, with later games revealing more complex characters than just a faceless enemy.
