Willie Cochran
Willie B. Cochran (born 1953) is an American politician and former Chicago Police Department officer. Cochran served as alderman of Chicago, Illinois' 20th Ward from 2007 until 2019. Early life, education and career Cochran was born one of ten children to Jasper and Gessner Cochran. Cochran graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1975 and received his MPA from Illinois Institute of Technology. Cochran served in the Chicago Police Department from 1977 until 2003, rising from patrol-man to sergeant. Aldermanic career Cochran was elected alderman for the 20th ward of the City of Chicago in 2007, unseating Arenda Troutman with 63% of the vote. Cochran was subsequently reelected in 2011 and 2015. Troutman did not seek reelection in 2019, after being indicted on a federal charge. Chicago City Council
The Chicago City Council is the legislative branch of the government of the City of Chicago in Illinois. It consists of 50 alderpersons elected from 50 wards to serve four-year terms. The council is gaveled into session regularly, usually monthly, to consider ordinances, orders, and resolutions whose subject matter includes code changes, utilities, taxes, and many other issues. The Chicago City Council Chambers are located in Chicago City Hall, as are the downtown offices of the individual alderpersons and staff. The presiding officer of the council is the Mayor of Chicago. The secretary is the City Clerk of Chicago. Both positions are city-wide elected offices. In the absence of the mayor, an alderperson elected to the position of President Pro Tempore serves as the presiding officer. Greater Grand Crossing, Chicago
Greater Grand Crossing is one of the 77 community areas of Chicago, Illinois. It is located on the city's South Side. History Etymology The name "Grand Crossing" comes from an 1853 right-of-way feud between the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway and the Illinois Central Railroad that led to a frog war and a crash that killed 18 people. The crash was the result of Roswell B. Mason (later to serve as mayor of Chicago) illegally constructing railroad tracks, on behalf of the Illinois Central, across another railroad company's tracks. Due to the lack of safety at the crossing, trains made complete stops here and therefore industry developed around the area to cater to the railroad workers. Nineteenth century The area was developed by Paul Cornell, the developer of what is now Hyde Park, Chicago, throughout the 1870s. Grade separation did not occur at the rail crossing until 1912.
