William James Herder
William James Herder (1849–1922), publisher, born Old Perlican, Newfoundland Colony, was the founder of Newfoundland's first daily newspaper, '' The Evening Telegram''. Herder was educated at Methodist Academy and in 1863 had apprenticed as a printer for the ''Courier''. When the ''Courier'' experienced financial difficulties Herder had bought it and in 1872 began the ''Evening Telegram''. Herder also started the ''Advertisers Gazette'' in 1883, which experienced limited success. Herder was an avid sports fan, as evident with the participation of many of the Herder family, that in 1935 the Evening Telegram donated the Herder Memorial Trophy to Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey League for the winning team. Old Perlican, Newfoundland And Labrador
Old Perlican is a fishing village on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Incorporated in 1971, it is one of the oldest fishing communities in Newfoundland; it served as the major fishing station in Trinity Bay for migratory fisherman from England in the 17th century. History Its name was recorded as "Parlican" as early as 1597, with the "old" being added sometime later to distinguish it from New Perlican further up the bay. It was settled by at least 1640. A "planter" (an early settler or colonist) named John Barrett (1654-1714) lived there after arriving from Poole, England in 1711. One of, if not, the oldest recorded English land transaction in Newfoundland archives is between John Barrett and John Carter in 1711 in Old Perlican. Newfoundland Colony
Newfoundland Colony was an English and, later, British colony established in 1610 on the island of Newfoundland off the Atlantic coast of Canada, in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That followed decades of sporadic English settlement on the island, which was at first seasonal, rather than permanent. It was made a Crown colony in 1824 and a Dominion in 1907. Its economy collapsed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Newfoundland relinquished its dominion status, effectively becoming once again a colony governed by appointees from the Colonial Office in Whitehall in London. The Telegram
''The Telegram'' is a daily newspaper published weekdays and Saturdays (as ''The Weekend Telegram'') in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. History ''The Evening Telegram'' was first published on April 3, 1879 by William James Herder. It adopted its current name in 1998, although it was also briefly published under this name in 1881. Herder and his descendants owned and published ''The Evening Telegram'' until it was sold to Thomson Newspapers (now Thomson Corporation) in 1970, and continued as publishers until the departure of Stephen R. Herder (William's Grandson) in 1991. William Herder began as a printer for the St. John's weekly ''The Courier''. Herder Memorial Trophy
The Herder Memorial Trophy, or Herder, is the championship trophy awarded annually to the senior ice hockey champions of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The cast silver trophy was originally donated in 1935 by the Herder family, then owners of '' The Evening Telegram'' newspaper, as a memorial to five brothers who played hockey in St. John's. The Herder was first awarded to the Corner Brook team that won the inaugural all-Newfoundland hockey championship on March 22, 1935. The most recent winners of the Herder Memorial Trophy were the Southern Shore Breakers on April 23, 2022. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region.
