William Dickie
William James Dickie (10 April 1869 – 24 June 1921) was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand, and opposition Whip. Biography Dickie was one of six children; he was born in Cobden, Westland, on 10 April 1869 to William Dickie (who had arrived in New Zealand in the late 1850s from Menstrie, Scotland) and Mary Dent, who were early settlers to Greymouth. He farmed with Arthur Ingham Dent from 1902 in Lyndhurst near Ashburton. He won the Selwyn electorate in 1911, and again in December 1914. The electorate was abolished for the 1919 election, and he was defeated in 1919 by William Nosworthy standing for Ashburton. New Zealand Liberal Party
The New Zealand Liberal Party was the first organised political party in New Zealand. It governed from 1891 until 1912. The Liberal strategy was to create a large class of small land-owning farmers who supported Liberal ideals, by buying large tracts of Māori land and selling it to small farmers on credit. The Liberal Government also established the basis of the later welfare state, with old age pensions, developed a system for settling industrial disputes, which was accepted by both employers and trade unions. In 1893 it extended voting rights to women, making New Zealand the first country in the world to enact universal adult suffrage. ''The Evening Post'' (8 February 1865 – 6 July 2002) was an afternoon metropolitan daily newspaper based in Wellington, New Zealand. It was founded in 1865 by Dublin-born printer, newspaper manager and leader-writer Henry Blundell, who brought his large family to New Zealand in 1863. Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. Mental disorders (including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, anxiety disorders), physical disorders (such as chronic fatigue syndrome), and substance abuse (including alcoholism and the use of and withdrawal from benzodiazepines) are risk factors. John McAlpine
Sir John Kenneth McAlpine (21 July 1906 – 11 January 1984) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. He was the Member of Parliament for Selwyn from 1946 to 1966, when he retired. Biography McAlpine was born in Christchurch in 1906, the son of a sheepfarmer – Walter Kenneth McAlpine. He received his education at Christ's College in Christchurch. After school, he worked at his father's high-country station at Craigieburn, New Zealand in the Southern Alps east of Arthur's Pass. He became the manager of that station in 1929 and later lived at Spye, a locality in North Canterbury near Omihi, where his father had farmed. McAlpine married Lesley Hay in 1935; she was a descendant of Ebenezer Hay of Pigeon Bay who was the earliest white settler in Canterbury. Charles Albert Creery Hardy (23 September 1843 – 29 August 1922) was an independent conservative Member of Parliament in New Zealand. He was elected to the Selwyn electorate in the 1899 general election, but was defeated in 1911, when he was a candidate for the then newly formed Reform Party. Methven, New Zealand
Methven ( mi, Piwakawaka) is a small town in the Canterbury, New Zealand, Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located near the western edge of the Canterbury Plains, 35 kilometres north of Ashburton, New Zealand, Ashburton and 95 kilometres west of Christchurch, and at an elevation of 320m. The town is a service centre for agriculture in the surrounding area, and is a base for skiing at the nearby Mount Hutt skifield. The town slogan is "Amazing Space". History In 1869, Robert Patton purchased a farm property and called it ''Methven'', after the name of his old home town in Perthshire, Scotland. The name of the farm subsequently became the name of the town and surrounding district.
