William Crabtree (architect)
William Crabtree (1905–1991) was an English architect. His reputation rests mainly on his Peter Jones Department Store, Sloane Square and King's Road, Chelsea, London (1932–37), designed for John Spedan Lewis (1885–1963), the founder of the John Lewis Partnership. Other works Crabtree worked in collaboration with Slater & Moberly, with Professor Sir Charles Herbert Reilly (1874−1948), Crabtree's former mentor at Liverpool University, as a consultant. It was one of the first 20th century uses of the glass curtain-wall in England, and was influenced by the work of Erich Mendelsohn, the Prussian architect, who lectured twice at Liverpool University. Reilly and Crabtree also collaborated on the John Lewis Department Store in Oxford Street, London. Peter Jones (department Store)
Peter Jones & Partners is a large department store in central London. It is owned by John Lewis Partnership and located in Sloane Square, Chelsea. History The shop is named after Peter Rees Jones (1842–1905), the son of a Carmarthenshire hat manufacturer. After serving an apprenticeship with a draper in Cardigan, Jones moved to London and established a small shop in Marylebone Lane. He then moved to central London, and in 1877, he moved to 4–6 King's Road, the current site of the store. The business flourished, soon expanding to cover most of the block, occupied on a 999-year lease from the Cadogan estate at £6,000 per year, the terms of which have never been increased. After a period of troubled trading and Jones' death, the store was purchased by John Lewis of the eponymous Oxford Street store, who handed it over to his son John Spedan Lewis in 1914. Patrick Abercrombie
Sir Leslie Patrick Abercrombie (; 6 June 1879 – 23 March 1957) was an English regional and town planner. Abercrombie was an academic during most of his career, and prepared one city plan and several regional studies prior to the Second World War. He came to prominence in the 1940s for his urban plans of the cities of Plymouth, Hull, Bath, Bournemouth, Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Clyde Valley and Greater London. Early life Patrick Abercrombie was born in Ashton-upon-Mersey, one of the nine children of Sarah and William Abercrombie, a stockbroker and businessman who had wide artistic interests, particularly of the Arts and Crafts school. In 1887, the family moved to a new home in Sale, designed by a Leicester architect, Joseph Goddard, with interiors influenced by designer John Aldam Heaton.
