Wichtrach is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Wichtrach was created on 1 January 2004 by uniting the independent municipalities of Niederwichtrach and Oberwichtrach. The parish church of Oberwichtrach was first mentioned in 1180. The two Wichtrach villages were first mentioned in 1180 as ''Wichtracho''. Geography Wichtrach has an area of . Bern-Mittelland (administrative District)
Bern-Mittelland District in the Canton of Bern was created on 1 January 2010. It is part of the Bern-Mittelland administrative region, and is the only district in the region. It contains 75 municipalities with an area of and a population () of . It is made up of the valley of the rivers Aare and Emme, some of the foothills of the Bernese Alps, as well as the plain around the capital Bern, and has many small farms and hilly forested regions with small to mid-sized towns scattered throughout. It is perhaps best known by foreigners and visitors for the Emmental. The classic Swiss cheese with holes Emmentaler comes from this region's forests and pastures, of hilly and low mountainous countryside in the range. Oppligen
Oppligen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Oppligen is first mentioned in 1234 as ''Oppelingen''. The oldest trace of a settlement is a Bronze Age earthwork on the Oppligerbergli. In addition, Roman coins and several early medieval graves indicate that the area remained inhabited. By the 13th century, Interlaken Abbey owned the village and its court. In 1336 the residents of Oppligen were listed as citizens of the Abbey. In 1528, Bern adopted the Protestant Reformation and secularized the Abbey and all its lands. Oppligen became part of the newly created Bernese district of Interlaken. The chapel at Oppligerbergli was first mentioned in 1250, but was demolished during the secularization of 1528. The village was part of the parish of Oberwichtrach (now Wichtrach municipality). Gerzensee
Gerzensee is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The town is named after its lake: Gerzensee. History Gerzensee is first mentioned in 1228 as ''Gercentse''. The oldest trace of a settlement in the area comes from scattered neolithic artifacts found around the municipality. La Tène and Roman era artifacts indicate that the area remained settled. By the Middle Ages the Freiherr von Kramburg had built his Festi Castle above the village and ruled over part of the valley. After about 1300 the Kramburg lands were acquired by another noble. Over the following centuries, the land was traded and sold multiple times. Tägertschi
Tägertschi is a former municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. On 1 January 2017 the former municipality of Tägertschi merged into the municipality of Münsingen. History Tägertschi is first mentioned in 1273 as ''Tegersche''. For most of their history, the village of Tägertschi along with the settlements of Stalden and Ämligen were part of the parish and municipality of Münsingen. Eventually Ämligen and Stalden im Emmental (now part of Konolfingen) formed an independent political municipality. However, in 1923, Ämligen (which at that time had about 35 residents) voted to separate themselves from Stalden and form a new municipality with Tägertschi. A railroad station on the Bern- Langnau was completed near Tägertschi in 1864. Today it is located on the municipal border between Tägertschi and Konolfingen. Kirchdorf, Switzerland
Kirchdorf is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. On 1 January 2018 the former municipalities of Gelterfingen, Mühledorf and Noflen merged into the municipality of Kirchdorf. History Kirchdorf is first mentioned in 1228 as ''Chilthorf''. The oldest trace of a settlement in the area are several La Tène graves near the current cemetery. A prehistoric earthwork in the Gestelenwald may have had a village near it. Kiesen
Kiesen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History The oldest trace of a settlement in the area is a neolithic stone ax which was found at Rotachen. Other prehistoric finds include scattered late-Bronze Age items and tools and Roman coins. Jaberg
Jaberg is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Jaberg is first mentioned in 1259 as ''Jagberc''. The oldest trace of a settlement in the area is a Hallstatt burial mound. During the Early Middle Ages the same area was used as a cemetery. A small hill fort from the same era indicates that there was probably a village near the Jabergwald. During the Middle Ages wooden castle was built near the Aare ferry. According to Konrad Justinger it was destroyed by Bern in 1286. The village was probably owned by the Lords of Krauchtal until the 15th century, when it was acquired by a noble family from Bern. Herbligen
Herbligen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Herbligen is first mentioned in 1302. The earliest trace of a settlement in the area is a large prehistoric fortification on the Eggrain and Wolfenburg hill. The Helisbühl hill may be an artificially created hill from around the same era. During the Late Middle Ages many wealthy citizens of Bern and Thun owned land or rights in the village. The village formed a school district with the neighboring village of Brenzikofen in 1665. The two communities built a school house at Helisbühl. The school was in operation for almost two centuries, before it was abandoned in 1834. A new school house was built in the area in 1973. Beginning in the 1980s many commuters from Bern and Thun settled in Herbligen causing a construction boom.
