White Shield School
White Shield Public School District 85 is a school district headquartered in Roseglen, North Dakota. It is entirely within McLean County, North Dakota, McLean County and serves White Shield, North Dakota, White Shield. It is affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). It previous building is from 1952, and by 2021 it was gaining a new building. The current two story, facility was scheduled to open in 2016. To deal with teacher shortages, White Shield hired Filipino/a national teachers with J-1 visas. By February 2020 the school had no more vacancies of teachers. McLean County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,771. Its county seat is Washburn. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on March 8, 1883, with areas partitioned from Burleigh, Sheridan, and (now-extinct) Stevens counties. The county was named for John A. McLean, the first mayor of Bismarck. The county organization was completed on November 1 of that year. Its boundaries were altered in 1885, in 1892, and in 1908. It has retained its current configuration since November 3, 1908, when a portion of its previous territory was partitioned to recreate Sheridan County (Sheridan had been dissolved on November 8, 1892, with its territory annexed to McLean). White Shield ( ari, nahtasuutaaká, hid, maanaagi iixodagish) is a census-designated place (CDP) lying within the boundaries of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation. It is located "on" the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in McLean County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 336 at the 2010 census. It is considered the primary community of the Arikara (Sahnish) people and is named for Chief White Shield. White Shield was founded in 1954 to replace the town of Elbowoods (Arikara: hiswíkAt (), which was inundated by the creation of Lake Sakakawea.
