White Main
The White Main (german: Weißer Main or ''Weißmain'', not to be confused with the Weismain), is the larger and shorter of the two headstreams of the river Main. It rises in the Fichtelgebirge and merges near Steinenhausen, southwest of Kulmbach, with the left-hand, southern headstream, the Red Main, to form the Main. The length of the White Main is 51.7 km. The source of the White Main lies on light granite rock, which lends it its white colouration. Sources The source of the White Main is a wellspring located at 887 m above NN on the eastern slope of the Ochsenkopf. Margrave Frederick fixed it and had it enclosed in granite blocks in 1717. He also had the Hohenzollern coat-of-arms carved into the granite. White Main Spring
The White Main Spring (german: Weißmainquelle) is the source of the White Main river, the right-hand and northern headstream of the River Main, a major tributary of the Rhine in Germany. It is located at a height of 887 metres above sea level on the eastern slopes of the Ochsenkopf mountain and is viewed as the source of the Main, even though the Red Main is several kilometres longer. Usually the White Main Spring is stronger (i.e. has a higher volumetric flow) than the Red Main Spring. Margrave Frederick of Brandenburg had it traced in 1717 and impounded in granite blocks bearing the Hohenzollern coat of arms. The spring bears the name ''Fürstenbrunnen'' ("Prince's Well"), but is not to be confused with the Upper and Lower Fürstenbrunnen on the Ochsenkopf. Ölschnitz (White Main)
The Ölschnitz is a right-bank, northern headstream of the White Main in the German province of Upper Franconia in Bavaria. It is long. Course The Ölschnitz has its source at an impoundment and granite well stone in Solg, a village in the borough of Münchberg. It discharges into the White Main near Bad Berneck. The Ölschnitz flows from Solg through a wide valley to the village of Ölschnitz. It then flows down to Tennersreuth, passes under the A 9 motorway, supplies water for the Streitau Mill and continues to Böseneck. From here the little river snakes through an ever-narrower valley. After many bends it reaches the ''Entenmühle'' ("duck mill"), then flows around the hill spur near Stein in a large curve before cutting through the hard, diabase rock in a steep, rocky, narrow valley, rich in flora, and reaching the spa park (''Kurpark'') at Bad Berneck. Bad Berneck
Bad Berneck () is a spa town in the district of Bayreuth, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated on the White Main river, in the Fichtelgebirge mountains, 13 km northeast of Bayreuth. Its official title is ''Bad Berneck im Fichtelgebirge''. It lies in the northern part of the Bavarian province of Upper Franconia. Since 1857 it has been a spa, initially based on its climate and whey products. In 1930 it became a Kneipp spa and, in 1950, a Kneipp health spa. Geography The town of Bad Berneck lies on the western edge of the Fichtelgebirge in the Ölschnitz valley, which enters the White Main below the old town or ''Altstadt''.
