Wellington Cup
The Wellington Cup is a Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race in New Zealand held annually in late January at Trentham Racecourse in Trentham by the Wellington Racing Club. History Inaugurated in 1874, the Wellington Cup has been raced over various distances: * 2 miles : 1874-1889 * miles : 1890-1941 * 2 miles : 1942-1973 * 3200 metres : 1974-2008 * 2400 metres : 2009-2015 * 3200 metres : 2016 onwards There were two prior Wellington Cups in 1867 and 1868. These were unofficial events run by the first Wellington Jockey Club and not recognised by the NZ Turf Register. The Wellington Cup is one of New Zealand's most famous and popular races and currently offers a purse of NZ$300,000 which belies its Group Three status. Bob Skelton (jockey)
Robert James Skelton (28 December 1934 – 19 August 2016) was a New Zealand jockey who competed from the 1950s through the 1980s. Among his many major race wins, Skelton rode Great Sensation to three victories in the Wellington Cup in 1961-63 and won the Auckland Cup on Rose Mellay in 1974 and again in 1977 on Royal Cadenza. In 1976, he rode Van der Hum to victory in Australia's most prestigious race, the Melbourne Cup, and ten years later rode Rising Fear into second place in the 1986 Cup. He was also successful in completing a double in the Perth Cup on Magistrate in 1980 and 1981. Overall winning 20 3200m and two mile races. In the 1978 Queen's Birthday Honours, Skelton was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to horse racing as a jockey. Overall he won 9 New Zealand Riding Premierships. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Castletown (horse)
Castletown (3 October 1986 – 17 December 2017) was a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse who won over $2 million in prize money and is best known for winning one of New Zealand's toughest staying tests, the Wellington Cup, on three occasions. He had over 100 starts, from two to eight years of age, including a record 13 races over 3,200 metres, a distance at which he excelled. Over the distance, he won the Wellington Cup in 1991, 1992, and 1994, and the Auckland Cup in 1992. In his third win in the Wellington Cup, Castletown carried topweight of 58 kilograms, and won a special place in New Zealand racing history, accompanied by the memorable "the dream bursts into reality" commentary from Tony Lee. Great Sensation
Great Sensation (foaled 1952) was a champion New Zealand bred thoroughbred stayer. He was sired by Cassock and out of the mare, Speedy. Great Sensation began his racing career in 1956 at Wingatui Racecourse in Dunedin. Nicknamed ''Cracker,'' he was ridden by Bob Skelton, who rated him as the best stayer he had even ridden. Great Sensation won a number of important New Zealand races but is best remembered for his winning three consecutive Wellington Cups from 1961 through 1963. In winning his first Cup in 1961, Great Sensation posted an Australasian record time of 3:17.50 for two miles. Cynisca (horse)
Cynisca (foaled 1886 in New Zealand) was a Thoroughbred mare racehorse named for the Spartan princess Cynisca who became the first woman in history to win at the ancient Olympic Games when she won the four-horse chariot race in 396 BC. The New Zealand mare is best remembered for winning three consecutive Wellington Cups. She was owned by Sir George Clifford and George Hunter. Il Tempo was a champion New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse, by Time and Again out of Timing. He is probably New Zealand's greatest ever stayer, having won the Auckland Cup two times, and also the Wellington Cup once. The Wellington Cup was over 2 miles and he won it in a ''world-record time of 3:16.2'', a record which still stands today. Il Tempo also won the Chalmers Handicap over two miles, plus being placed over the two-mile distance several times. He was trained by Mr Bruce Priscott, a butcher by trade. Miss World is the oldest existing international beauty pageant. It was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951.
