Welcome.US is a nonprofit organization that coordinates the support of Afghan refugees in US. The organization was formed in 2021 as the US evacuated 100,000 refugees from Afghanistan following the transfer of power to the Taliban. The organization coordinates government, private sector and non-government organizations providing financial, material and advisory support to Afghan refugees. The organization is led by Nazanin Ash supervised by a board of directors that is supported by three former US presidents and three former US first ladies. Formation and leadership Welcome.US launched in September 2021 led by CEO Nazanin Ash. The board of directors is co-chaired by John Bridgeland and Cecilia Muñoz with support from Laura Bush, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama, Barack Obama, Khaled Hosseini, and Stanley McCrystal. Nazanin Ash
Nazanin Ash is the chief executive officer of Welcome.US and has previously worked in the US State Department of state in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs leading the Middle East Partnership Initiative and at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on international development and HIV/AIDS. Born to parents who left Iran, she is an advocate for American support for refugees, and was named in '' Washingtonian'''s list of the 500 most influential people in Washington, DC, in 2022. Early life and education Ash was born in Kansas to parents from Iran. Both her parents emigrated to the United States as students, expecting to return home after her father completed his Ph.D., but decided not to go back to Iran following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Bryn Mawr College, where she received the Hope Wearn Troxell Memorial Prize. 2021 Kabul Airlift
Large-scale evacuations of foreign citizens and some vulnerable Afghan citizens took place amid the withdrawal of US and NATO forces during the final days of the war in Afghanistan and the Taliban offensive in Afghanistan in 2021. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
In the United States, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, is a federal program that provides food-purchasing assistance for low- and no-income people. It is a federal aid program, administered by the United States Department of Agriculture under the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), though benefits are distributed by specific departments of U.S. states (e.g. Division of Social Services, Department of Health and Human Services, etc.).
