Walter James, 2nd Baron Northbourne
Walter Henry James, 2nd Baron Northbourne DL (25 March 1846 – 27 January 1923), was a British peer and Liberal politician. James was the son of Walter James, 1st Baron Northbourne. He attended Oxford University, and won a blue at tennis in 1868. He won his doubles match, but lost the singles to Cambridge University's Arthur Kinnaird. He was elected to the House of Commons for Gateshead in 1874, a seat he held until 1893 when he succeeded his father in the barony and entered the House of Lords. He was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 1st Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteers on 10 August 1898. Arthur Charles Wellesley, 4th Duke of Wellington, (15 March 1849 – 18 June 1934), styled Lord Arthur Wellesley from 1884 to 1900, was a British peer and politician, and a member of the well-known Wellesley family. He joined the military and served in the Household Division. Upon his childless brother's death in 1900, he inherited the family title and estates. Baron Northbourne
Baron Northbourne, of Betteshanger in the County of Kent, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1884 for Sir Walter James, 2nd Baronet, who had earlier represented Kingston upon Hull in the House of Commons as a Conservative. His son, the second Baron, sat as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Gateshead. The latter's great-grandson, the fifth Baron, who succeeded his father in 1982, was one of the ninety elected hereditary peers that were allowed to remain in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999, and sat as a cross-bencher until his retirement in 2018. , the titles are held by his son, the sixth baron, who succeeded his father in that year. William Allan (UK Politician)
Sir William Allan (29 November 1837 – 28 December 1903) was a Scottish Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party politician and engineer. He was Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Gateshead (UK Parliament constituency), Gateshead from 1893 until his death in 1903. Allan was born in Dundee, the son of engineer James Allan. His father suffered financial failure, causing Allan to begin work as an apprentice at age 10. He emigrated to the United States, working for several years in Paterson, New Jersey before returning to Glasgow. He began his professional career was as a steamship engineer in the early years of construction of these vessels and his business was the Scotia engineering works in Sunderland, England. He was also involved with a sea line, the Albyn Line. Sir William Hutt, KCB, PC (6 October 1801 – 24 November 1882) was a British Liberal politician who was heavily involved in the colonisation of New Zealand and South Australia. Background and education Hutt was born in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. He was the brother of Sir George Hutt and John Hutt, the second governor of Western Australia. He was educated privately at Ryde, Isle of Wight, and Camberwell, and graduated BA (1827) and MA (1831) from Trinity College, Cambridge. Political career Hutt entered Parliament as MP for Kingston upon Hull in 1832, holding the seat until 1837, when William Wilberforce defeated him. He regained it in 1838 when Wilberforce was unseated on petition. He had an interest in colonial affairs, and became increasingly involved in them.
