WPSR (90.7 FM) is a non-commercial radio station broadcasting a Variety format. Licensed to Evansville, Indiana, the station is currently owned by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation as a high school radio station. The station is also broadcast on HD radio. The station initially only broadcast from 6:45 a.m.–2:45 p.m. on school days when it went on the air in the 1950s. In the 1990s, broadcasts were expanded until midnight every night. During the non-school hours, the station would play automated 1980s music. Southwestern Indiana is an 11-county region of southern Indiana, United States located at the southernmost and westernmost part of the state. Variety is a radio format that plays music across numerous genres. Free-form variety is associated with a wide range of programming including talk, sports, and music from a wide spectrum. This format is usually found on smaller, non-commercial public broadcasting stations such as college radio, community radio or high school radio stations. If a variety formatted station has a program director, that person exerts little if any influence on the music or other programming choices beyond the normal regulatory control required by that country's licensing regulations. WSWI (820 AM) is a non-commercial educational radio station licensed to Evansville, Indiana, United States, carrying an alternative rock format known as "95.7 The Spin". Owned by the Board of Trustees of the University of Southern Indiana (USI), the campus radio station has studios and a transmitter site that are both located on the USI campus in Evansville. WSWI operates during the daytime hours only, thus in addition to a standard analog transmission, the station's format is broadcast continuously via a simulcast over the HD2 digital subchannel of WPSR and a relay over low-power analog translator W239CI (95.7 FM), along with being available online. High School Radio
High school radio are radio stations located at high schools and usually operated by its students with faculty supervision. The oldest extant high school AM radio station is AM 1450 KBPS in Portland, Oregon. Portland radio station KBPS, first licensed in 1923, is the second oldest radio station overall in the city of Portland. The student body of Benson Polytechnic High School purchased the transmitter and other equipment from Stubbs Electric in Portland for $1,800. Money for the purchase of the station came from student body funds. On March 23, 1923, the student body of Benson was licensed by the federal government to operate a radio station using 200 watts of power at 834 kilocycles.
