WCVY is a local student-run high school radio station in Coventry, Rhode Island that broadcasts on 91.5 FM. The station is owned by Coventry Public Schools of Rhode Island, and broadcasts from Coventry High School. The station broadcasts a combination of adult album alternative (AAA) and modern rock music formats. The station, which went on the air October 19, 1978, has been assigned these call letters by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). From 2007 until 2009, WCVY shared time with Spanish-language religious station WRJI; that station left the air in November 2009 and did not return for over a year, and was thus deleted by the FCC in January 2011. In June 2011, the FCC removed the provision in WCVY's license that only allowed it to operate from 2–10 p.m. on weekdays, as the deletion of WRJI rendered the time-share agreement between the two stations moot. Rhode Island Public Radio, doing business as The Public's Radio, is the NPR member radio network for the state of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Its studios are in the historic Union Station in downtown Providence. High School Radio
High school radio are radio stations located at high schools and usually operated by its students with faculty supervision. The oldest extant high school AM radio station is AM 1450 KBPS in Portland, Oregon. Portland radio station KBPS, first licensed in 1923, is the second oldest radio station overall in the city of Portland. The student body of Benson Polytechnic High School purchased the transmitter and other equipment from Stubbs Electric in Portland for $1,800. Money for the purchase of the station came from student body funds. On March 23, 1923, the student body of Benson was licensed by the federal government to operate a radio station using 200 watts of power at 834 kilocycles. WRJI
WRJI (91.5 FM) was a radio station licensed to serve East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The station was owned by Educational Radio For the Public of the New Millennium. It aired Spanish religious programming during hours that WCVY was not broadcasting (14:00-22:00 weekdays during the school year except holidays and vacation). The station had been assigned the WRJI callsign by the Federal Communications Commission from January 18, 2006 – January 19, 2011. License deleted WRJI had not operated from November 2, 2009 – November 25, 2010, nor it asked the FCC for a silent authorization in that time. WRJI's license was deleted on January 19, 2011. WNPN (89.3 FM) is a radio station broadcasting an NPR news/talk format. It is the flagship broadcast outlet for The Public's Radio (formerly known as Rhode Island Public Radio). Its official community of license is Newport, Rhode Island, but from a tall tower in Tiverton the signal covers most of Rhode Island and the South Coast of Massachusetts. WNPE (102.7 FM) is a public radio station, providing programming from The Public's Radio (formerly known as Rhode Island Public Radio) to southern Rhode Island from its transmitter at Narragansett Pier. It was the first FM transmitter in the network. Prior to operating noncommercially, the 102.7 facility was a commercial radio station from its sign-on in 1990 to 2007.
