Wyoming County, West Virginia
Wyoming County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,382. Its county seat is Pineville. The county was created in 1850 from Logan County and named for the Lenape word meaning "large plains". Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. The county is drained by the branches of Sandy and Guyandotte rivers. The land surface is mountainous. In 1863, West Virginia's counties were divided into civil townships, with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state, and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts. Wyoming County was divided into six districts: Barkers Ridge, Center, Clear Fork, Huff Creek, Oceana, and Slab Fork. Wyoming County Courthouse And Jail
The Wyoming County Courthouse and Jail is a historic courthouse and jail located in Pineville, West Virginia, Pineville, Wyoming County, West Virginia. It consists of the unusually large Neoclassical architecture, neoclassical courthouse, with a massive pediment, and an adjoining stone jail. The courthouse was designed by West Virginia state architect A. F. Wysong and built in 1916 of locally quarried stone. The jail was built of similar materials in 1930 with Work Projects Administration labor. A statue of preacher W.H.H. Cook, an early settler of the area and influential citizen, stands in front of the courthouse. The Wyoming County Courthouse was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. West Virginia Route 16 (WV 16) is a north–south route located in the U.S. State of West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at the Virginia state line in Bishop, West Virginia, Bishop, McDowell County, West Virginia, McDowell County, where the route continues south as Virginia State Route 16. The northern terminus is at West Virginia Route 2 in St. Marys, West Virginia, St. Marys, Pleasants County, West Virginia, Pleasants County, on the south bank of the Ohio River. West Virginia Route 971
West Virginia Route 971 is a north–south state highway in Wyoming County, West Virginia. The route runs from West Virginia Route 97 in Baileysville north to West Virginia Route 10 in Oceana. It runs through mountainous, rural terrain, connecting Baileysville and Oceana to the communities of Clear Fork, Lillydale, and Lillyhaven. WV 971 has been the highest numbered state highway in West Virginia since July 2017, when WV 972 was decommissioned and absorbed by WV 93. Route description WV 971 begins at a junction with WV 97 in Baileysville, north of the Guyandotte River. Its southern terminus lies within the R. D. U.S. Route 121 (US 121) is a proposed U.S. highway designated as the Coalfields Expressway, a four-lane highway stretching from Beckley, West Virginia, to Pound, Virginia, approximately in length. It is designed to connect Interstate 64 (I-64) and I-77 in West Virginia near Beckley to US 23 in Wise County, Virginia, at Pound. While US 121 will not connect directly to US 21, it will intersect at the latter road's original alignment, now a part of I-77. The western terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 85 northeast of Kopperston, West Virginia, Kopperston in the rural southeast corner of Boone County, West Virginia, Boone County. West Virginia Route 97
West Virginia Route 97 is an east–west state highway in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The western terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 52 and West Virginia Route 80 in Hanover. The eastern terminus is at exit 42 of the West Virginia Turnpike (Interstate 64 and Interstate 77) in Mabscott.
