Woolfardisworthy, Mid Devon
Woolfardisworthy (pronounced "Woolsery") is a village and civil parish in Mid Devon. It is situated about 5 miles (9 km) north of Crediton. According to the ''Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names'' (Eilert Ekwall, 4th ed., 1960), the origin of the name is probably "Wulfheard's homestead". The element "worthy" is from Old English ''worþig'', one of several words for a homestead or small settlement found in English place names. Along with a few other places in Devon, it is one of the longest place names in England with 16 letters. Mid Devon
Mid Devon is a local government district in Devon, England. Its council is based in Tiverton. The district was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the borough of Tiverton and Crediton urban district together with Tiverton Rural District, and Crediton Rural District. It was originally called Tiverton District, but was renamed in 1978 by resolution of the district council. Geography Mid Devon shares borders with several other Devon districts as well as the county of Somerset. Neighbouring districts include Exeter, East Devon, North Devon, Teignbridge, West Devon and Torridge. Crediton
Crediton is a town and civil parish in the Mid Devon district of Devon in England. It stands on the A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road at the junction with the A3072 road to Tiverton, about north west of Exeter and around from the M5 motorway. It has a population of 8,304. However, the combined population of the parishes that make up the Crediton area is estimated to be 21,990. The town is situated in the narrow vale of the River Creedy, between two steep hills and is divided into two parts, the north or old town (People's park, Queen Elizabeth's Community College etc.) and the south and east or new town. Black Dog, Devon
Black Dog is a village in Mid Devon, ten miles west of Tiverton and six miles north of Crediton.
