Woodrow Wilson High School (Washington)
Silas High School is a four-year public secondary school in Tacoma, Washington. It is one of five traditional high schools in the Tacoma Public Schools and is located at the intersection of Orchard Street and 11th Street. Silas' current principal is Bernadette Ray; assistant principals are Alli Bennett, and Rindi Hartman. The school was formerly named Woodrow Wilson High School from its founding in 1958 until July 2021 after a wave of name changes following the 2020 racial protests that swept the world. Its attendance boundary includes Ruston. HillTop artists Dale Chihuly, a glass artist who graduated from the school, established HillTop Artists, a glass-working program at Silas. For a $20 fee, students can blow glass, make glass beads, and participate in kiln work. This program is run by glass artists who trained with Chihuly at the Pilchuck Glass School. Dale Chihuly ( ; born September 20, 1941) is an American glass artist and entrepreneur. He is well known in the field of Glassblowing, blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture". Early life Dale Patrick Chihuly was born on September 20, 1941, in Tacoma, Washington, Tacoma, Washington (state), Washington. His parents were George and Viola Chihuly; his paternal grandfather was born in Slovakia. Desmond Trufant
Desmond Trufant (born September 10, 1990) is an American former professional football player who was a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Washington Huskies and was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Darrell Robinson
Darrell Robinson (born December 23, 1963) is an American former track and field athlete who specialized in the 400-meter dash. He set a US high school national record of 44.69 seconds in the 400 m at the age of 18. He was in the world's top-five 400 m runners in 1985 and 1986. He won a bronze medal at the 1986 Goodwill Games, and won races at numerous high-profile track meetings. In 1989 he accused Carl Lewis, Florence Griffith-Joyner, and Bob Kersee (among others) of using or distributing performance-enhancing drugs. Dick Hannula
Dick Hannula, Sr. is an International Hall of Fame swimming coach and former competitive swimmer for Washington State University from Tacoma, Washington best remembered for starting the nationally recognized Tacoma Swim Club in 1953, which he coached through 1993. He coached his Wilson High School boys' teams to an impressive and nearly unprecedented 24 consecutive state championships from 1960 to 1983, and a total of 323 winning consecutive swim meets. He received global recognition for coaching Olympic team swimmer and 1969 gold medalist Kaye Hall Greff, and additional recognition for coaching 1979 World University Games Gold medalist Janet Buchan. Joey Gjertsen (born June 13, 1982) is an American professional Association football, soccer player. Career College Gjertsen started his college soccer at Tacoma Community College where he produced 31 goals and a school record 14 assists in his freshman campaign. He then transferred to Yavapai College where he won a NJCAA national championship. Transferring once again, he enjoyed a successful two-year career at The Evergreen State College, earning All-American honors, All-Region Team and Region I Player of the year honors in 2004. He was named as the Conference Player of the Year, as he led the league with 27 goals in 2003. Leo Randolph
Leo Randolph (born February 27, 1958) is an American former boxer, who won the Flyweight Gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Amateur career Randolph had an outstanding amateur career. Randolph was a product of the Tacoma Boys Club amateur program, along with fellow Olympic Gold Medalist Sugar Ray Seales, and future world champions Rocky Lockridge and Johnny Bumphus. Randolph was trained as an amateur and professional by Joe Clough, the head trainer at the Tacoma Boys Club. In 1975 he was the National Golden Gloves Flyweight champion.
