Wonuarra, South Australia
Wonuarra is a locality south-east of Paringa at the eastern end of the South Australian Riverland region. It lies east of the Sturt Highway between Paringa and Yamba, extending from the highway to the Victorian state border. Wonuarra was on the former Barmera railway line of the South Australian Railways; the Wonuarra siding was the first siding south of Paringa, from where the main commodity dispatched was bagged wheat. The siding was originally named Koora, but renamed to Wonuarra because the original name was easily confused with Noora, further south. Paringa, South Australia
Paringa is a small town in the Riverland of South Australia, from the border with Victoria. It is known for its vineyards and almond, citrus and stone fruit orchards. Its main feature is a six-span bridge that crosses the River Murray. One of the spans can be raised to allow houseboats and paddle-steamers to pass underneath. Railway Paringa was the terminus for 14 years of what eventually became the Barmera railway line – one of six lightly built lines that were built to encourage agricultural development in the Murraylands. Initially it extended from Tailem Bend to Meribah, in the Brown's Well district, in mid-1913 as planned. Soon afterwards the line was extended northwards to Paringa; the official opening took place on 3 October 1913. Fourteen years elapsed before the railway crossed the river to Renmark. Sturt Highway
Sturt Highway is an Australian national highway in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It is an important road link for the transport of passengers and freight between Sydney and Adelaide and the regions along the route. Initially an amalgam of trunk routes, the Sturt Highway was proclaimed a state highway in NSW in 1933. In 1955, the route was allocated a National Route number (20). It was included in the National Highway system in 1992, forming the Sydney-Adelaide Link. Chowilla Dam
Chowilla Dam was a proposed water storage reservoir on the Murray River in the 1960s. The dam wall would have been in South Australia, but the reservoir behind it would have stretched upstream into Victoria and New South Wales. The site was selected in 1960. Early preparations for its construction were conducted before the project was halted. These included a 23 km service railway from the Barmera railway line, which was dismantled without ever actually being used. Purpose The dam was proposed to provide flood regulation and reliable water supplies for South Australia, which pumps water from the lower Murray through pipelines across the Mount Lofty Ranges to Adelaide, and parts of the Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula. Renmark, South Australia
Renmark is a town in South Australia's rural Riverland area, and is located northeast of Adelaide, on the banks of the River Murray. The Sturt Highway between Adelaide and Sydney runs through the town; Renmark is the last major town encountered in South Australia when driving this route. It is a few kilometers west of the SA–Victoria and SA–NSW borders. It is above sea level. History It has been suggested that the name Renmark refers to a local Australian Aboriginal languages, Aboriginal word meaning "red mud" (the original inhabitants of the area were the Erawirung people).
