Wolves Between Them
''Wolves Between Them'' (French: ''Les loups entre eux'') is a 1936 French spy thriller film directed by Léon Mathot and starring Roger Duchesne, Jules Berry and Renée Saint-Cyr.Crisp p.322 The film's sets were designed by the art director Jacques Colombier. It is a sequel to the 1935 film '' Second Bureau''. Two further entries in the series ''A Man to Kill'' (1937) and ''Captain Benoît'' (1938) were released. The film was remade as the 1939 British release '' Secret Journey''. Synopsis A design for a new French gas mask has been stolen from Paris by a German spy. Captain Benoît of the Deuxième Bureau is sent to Nazi-ruled Berlin to try and recover it. Léon Mathot
Léon Mathot (5 March 1886, Roubaix, Nord-Pas-de-Calais - 6 March 1968, in Paris) was a French film actor and film director best known perhaps for playing Edmond Dantes in ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' film serial in 1918. He appeared in the 1923 silent film '' Coeur fidèle'', directed by Jean Epstein. He starred in some 60 films mostly in silent film between 1906 and 1939. He turned director in 1927 whilst still appearing in several films and retired in 1953 directing well over 20 films. Gina Manès (born Blanche Moulin; 7 April 1893 – 6 September 1989) was a French film actress and a major star of French silent cinema. After an early appearance in a Louis Feuillade film, she had significant roles in films of Germaine Dulac and Jean Epstein, including ''Cœur fidèle''. Career In Abel Gance's ''Napoléon'', she took the part of Joséphine de Beauharnais, and then played the title role in Jacques Feyder's '' Thérèse Raquin''. She made the transition to sound films but during the 1930s her popularity faded, and periods of residence in Morocco took her further from the public eye. She continued to take small roles in films, and also worked in the circus and in the theatre. Pierre Renoir (March 21, 1885 – March 11, 1952) was a French stage and film actor. He was the son of the impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir and elder brother of the film director Jean Renoir. He is also noted for being the first actor to play Georges Simenon's character Inspector Jules Maigret in ''Night at the Crossroads'', directed by his brother. Suzanne Desprès (16 December 1875 – 1 July 1951) was a French actress who was born at Verdun, Meuse and trained at the Paris Conservatoire, where in 1897 she obtained the first prize for comedy, and the second for tragedy. She then became associated with, and subsequently married, Lugné-Poe, the actor-manager, who had founded a new school of modern drama at the Théâtre de l'Œuvre. She achieved marked success in several of his plays there.
