Winterville (band)
Winterville were an English blues rock band, whose sound was influenced by the 1960s Blues sound of bands like Cream, and the 1990s Grunge sound of bands like Soundgarden. They released several singles and one album. When the band formed in 2003, they were named "The Others", under which they released their first EP. With the emergence of another band of the same name (see The Others (band)), the name was changed to "The Keytones". Again, another band had the name, so the band settled on the name "Winterville". There is also an Australian artist of the same name, but neither act has taken any steps to change their name. Formation Though Peter Shoulder played live shows with several different acts before Winterville, he didn't release any recordings until he met bassist Joss Clapp and the Belgian drummer Mario Goossens. Winterville is a city in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,201 at the 2020 census. History The community was named after John Winter, a railroad official. Winterville was incorporated in 1904. Since 1991, when the City of Athens dissolved its city charter to form the unified government of Athens-Clarke County, Winterville has been the only municipality located wholly within Athens-Clarke County. As of 2024, Athens-Clarke County has converted of the abandoned Athens-to—Savannah railroad spur into a paved walking trail titled "Firefly Trail". It will eventually connect to the Georgia Hi–Lo Trail, which will become the longest paved trail and longest arboretum in the United States. The Winterville site ( 22 WS 500) is a major archaeological site in unincorporated Washington County, Mississippi, north of Greenville and along the river. It consists of major earthwork monuments, including more than twelve large platform mounds and cleared and filled plazas. It is the type site for the ''Winterville Phase (1200 to 1400)'' of the Lower Yazoo Basin region of the Plaquemine Mississippian culture. Protected as a state park, it has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.
