Windows Live Video Messages was a Windows Live service by Microsoft. It combined digital video with e-mail into a service that allows all webcam users to create, send, and receive video messages to anyone in their Windows Live Contacts list, even when they are offline. The service also provided a Windows Sidebar gadget for Microsoft LifeCam users that allows them to access their top six contacts and essential Video Messages features directly from their desktop. Windows Live Video Messages was discontinued on July 21, 2010. The functionalities of Windows Live Video Messages was replaced by the Windows Live Messenger Wave 4 release. Windows Sidebar
Windows Desktop Gadgets (called Windows Sidebar in Windows Vista) is a discontinued widget engine for Microsoft Gadgets. Desktop Gadgets have been replaced by Windows 10 Taskbar Widgets. It was introduced with Windows Vista, in which it features a sidebar anchored to the side of the desktop. Its widgets can perform various tasks, such as displaying the time and date. In Windows Vista, the widgets are restricted to a sidebar but in Windows 7, they can be freely moved anywhere on the desktop. Windows Desktop Gadgets was discontinued in Windows 8. The Windows 8 Live Tiles can perform a similar function, but they are only visible when the Start menu is visible. They run in a more restrictive environment, making them less risky, but also less useful for some purposes, like system monitoring. MSN Soapbox
Soapbox on MSN Video was a service from Microsoft offered via its MSN portal. It was similar to YouTube in that it was an internet video-sharing service. In order to upload content, users were required to sign up for a Windows Live ID, if they did not already have one. The site launched a public beta in February 2007. On June 16, 2009, Microsoft said that they planned to scale back Soapbox, citing tough economic conditions. Uploads to the service ended on July 21, 2009, and in August 2009, the service officially retired. Soapbox used an interface heavily dependent on JavaScript and AJAX. The original codename for the project was Warhol, the Soapbox name being subsequently chosen by an intern during the summer of 2006. Windows Vista is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. A plugin for Silverlight is still available for a very small number of browsers.
