William Stewart (politician, Died 1748)
William Stewart ( – 3 May 1748) was a Scottish soldier and politician MP in the British Parliament. He was the third son of James Stewart, 5th Earl of Galloway and his wife Lady Catherine Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 9th Earl of Eglinton. He was educated at Glasgow University, and served as an officer in the British Army, becoming a captain in the 12th Dragoons in 1737. He sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1741 to 1747 as MP for Wigtown Burghs. His older brother James Stewart James Maitland Stewart (May 20, 1908 – July 2, 1997) was an American actor and military aviator. James Stewart, 5th Earl Of Galloway
Earl of Galloway is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1623 for Alexander Stewart, 1st Lord Garlies, with remainder to his heirs male bearing the name and arms of Stewart. He had already been created Lord Garlies in the Peerage of Scotland in 1607, with remainder to the heirs male of his body succeeding to the estates of Garlies. This branch of the Stewart family were distant relatives of the Stewart Kings of Scotland. Lord Galloway was succeeded by his second but eldest surviving son, the second Earl. He had already been created a Baronet, of Corsewell in the county of Wigtown, in 1627. This title is in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. His grandson, the fifth Earl (who had succeeded his elder brother, who in his turn had succeeded his father), was a politician. He was succeeded by his son, the sixth Earl. He was a Lord of Police. 1741 British General Election
The 1741 British general election returned members to serve in the House of Commons of the 9th Parliament of Great Britain to be summoned, after the merger of the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland in 1707. The election saw support for the government party increase in the quasi-democratic constituencies which were decided by popular vote, but the Whigs lost control of a number of rotten and pocket boroughs, partly as a result of the influence of the Prince of Wales, and were consequently re-elected with the barest of majorities in the Commons, Walpole's supporters only narrowly outnumbering his opponents. Partly as a result of the election, and also due to the crisis created by naval defeats in the war with Spain, Walpole was finally forced out of office on 11 February 1742, after his government was defeated in a motion of no confidence concerning a supposedly rigged by-election. The 1747 British general election returned members to serve in the House of Commons of the 10th Parliament of Great Britain to be summoned, after the merger of the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland in 1707. The election saw Henry Pelham's Whig government increase its majority and the Tories continue their decline. By 1747, thirty years of Whig oligarchy and systematic corruption had weakened party ties substantially; despite that Walpole, the main reason for the split that led to the creation of the Patriot Whig faction, had resigned, there were still almost as many Whigs in opposition to the ministry as there were Tories, and the real struggle for power was between various feuding factions of Whig aristocrats rather than between the old parties. Wigtown Burghs, also known as Wigton Burghs and Wigtown District of Burghs, was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1800 and of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1885. It was represented by one Member of Parliament (MP). Creation The British parliamentary constituency was created in 1708 following the Acts of Union, 1707 and replaced the former Parliament of Scotland burgh constituencies of Wigtown, New Galloway, Stranraer and Whithorn which had all been separately represented with one commissioner each. Alexander Seton Montgomerie, 9th Earl of Eglinton ( 1660 – 18 February 1729) was a Scottish peer, lord of the Eglinton Estate. Early life He was born about 1660, the eldest son of Alexander, 8th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Elizabeth Crichton, eldest daughter of William, 2nd Earl of Dumfries. From the time of the death of his grandfather, Hugh, in 1669 he was boarded with Matthew Fleming, the minister of Culross, Perthshire, who superintended his education at the school of Culross until 1673, when he was sent to the University of St. Andrews, where he remained till Lammas 1676. Montgomerie was a keen freemason. Career After the revolution he was chosen a privy counsellor by King William, and also a lord commissioner of the treasury. James Stewart ( – 27 April 1768) was a Scottish soldier and politician. He was the second son of James Stewart, 5th Earl of Galloway and his wife Lady Catherine Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 9th Earl of Eglinton. He was educated at Eton, and served as an officer in the Scots Guards for over 30 years, becoming a Lieutenant-General in 1758. He was a member of parliament (MP) in the Parliament of Great Britain for 27 years, representing Wigtown Burghs 1734–1741 and 1747–1754 and Wigtownshire 1741–1747 and 1754–1761.
