William Grove (16th-century MP)
William Grove (1532/33 – 1582), of Shaftesbury, Dorset, and Donhead St. Andrew, Wiltshire, was an English Member of Parliament and lawyer. He was the son of Robert Grove (MP), Robert Grove. He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester and New College, Oxford and was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1557. Grove bought estates at Donhead St Andrew and Sedgehill, both in Wiltshire, in 1563 and 1573 respectively. William Barry Grove
William Barry Grove (January 15, 1764 – March 30, 1818) was a Federalist U.S. Congressman from the state of North Carolina from 1791 to 1803. Grove was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1764. After studying law, he was admitted to the state bar and became a practicing attorney. In 1786, Grove was first elected to the North Carolina House of Commons; he would serve again in 1788 and 1789. In 1788, Grove was a delegate to the state convention that considered ratification of the United States Constitution; he voted against postponement of ratification, but the state did not ratify the constitution at that time. Grove was also a delegate to the 1789 state convention where North Carolina finally ratified the federal constitution. William Bywater Grove
William Bywater Grove (24 October 1848 – 6 January 1938), was an English biologist, in particular a botanist and microbiologist. He is remembered in particular as a mycologist. William Chaffin Grove
William Chaffin (Chafin or Chafyn) Grove (c. 1731–1793) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1768 to 1781. Grove was the son of Chafin Grove of Zeals, Wiltshire and his wife Ann Amor. He was educated at Sutton and was admitted at St John's College, Cambridge on 30 April 1750, aged 18. He entered Middle Temple in 1750 and was called to the bar in 1756. Grove was returned as Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury in the 1768 general election after a contest. In Parliament he voted consistently with the Opposition. He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for Dorset and Poole in 1769. In the 1774 election he decided not to contest Shaftesbury on account of the cost, but he had some property at Weymouth and was returned unopposed as MP for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. William Remsburg Grove
William Remsburg Grove (May 16, 1872 – August 6, 1952) was an American soldier who received the Medal of Honor. During the Philippine–American War, he charged against a group of rebels and assisted his commanding officer (J. Franklin Bell) in killing or capturing all of them while armed with only a pistol. For this he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1902. Early life William Grove was born in Montezuma, Iowa, on May 16, 1872. He was the second of ten children born to Silas Wright and Angeline (née Crowell) Grove. Silas Grove fought with Company E, 15th Iowa Infantry during the American Civil War. In his youth, Grove's family owned various newspapers in Iowa, Kansas and Colorado. All family members were expected to assist the fledgling newspapers, and Grove began working as a printer's devil at eight years old. William Robert Grove
Sir William Robert Grove, FRS FRSE (11 July 1811 – 1 August 1896) was a Welsh judge and physical scientist. He anticipated the general theory of the conservation of energy, and was a pioneer of fuel cell technology. He invented the Grove voltaic cell. Early life Born in Swansea, Wales, Grove was the only child of John, a magistrate and deputy lieutenant of Glamorgan, and his wife, Anne (née Bevan). His early education was in the hands of private tutors, before he attended Brasenose College, Oxford to study classics, though his scientific interests may have been cultivated by mathematician Baden Powell. Otherwise, his taste for science has no clear origin though his circle in Swansea was broadly educated. He graduated in 1832. In 1835, he was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn.
