Wigmore, Kent
Wigmore is a suburb/village in the southeast of the Medway conurbation in Kent, England. It is broadly bounded by the A278 road to the west, Rainham to the north and the M2 motorway to the south. History The placename is attested in 1275 as ''Wydemere'', from an Old English ''*wīd-mere'' "broad pool". A sparsely-populated hamlet and farming area until the 20th Century, Wigmore was briefly the site of a smallpox isolation hospital (Alexandra Hospital) from 1902, and began to be developed as a village from 1906 when the 365-acre Wigmore agricultural estate was partitioned and sold as plots, initially as smallholdings (hence the local “Smallholders Club”) and rural shanties for Medway families. Amenities St Matthew's Church was founded in 1925 and was replaced in the 1960s by architects Brett, Boyd and Bosanquet. A prefab Evangelical church was opened later. Medway
Medway is a unitary authority district and conurbation in Kent, South East England. It had a population of 278,016 in 2019. The unitary authority was formed in 1998 when Rochester-upon-Medway amalgamated with the Borough of Gillingham to form Medway Towns. It is now a unitary authority area run by Medway Council, independent of Kent County Council but still part of the ceremonial county of Kent. Medway is one of the boroughs included in the Thames Gateway development scheme. It is also the home of Universities at Medway, a tri-partite collaboration of the University of Greenwich, the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University on a single campus in Chatham, together with the University for the Creative Arts, which has a campus in Rochester. Gillingham and Rainham is a constituency in Kent represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since its 2010 creation by Rehman Chishti, a Conservative. A278 Road
The A278 (Hoath Way) is a road running north–south in north Kent, England. The whole length of the road is dual carriageway, within Medway Council but is a non-primary route. History The A278 was formerly used as the number for the Felbridge – Horsham road, which is now part of the A264. However, the A278 is now used for the long dual carriageway that links the M2 to the A2. The route The road begins at Junction 4 of the widened M2 (since 2003) where it travels in a northerly direction towards Gillingham. About along the route there is a roundabout, with road links to Hempstead and Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre on the left, and Wigmore on the right. Rainham, Kent
Rainham ( ) is a town in the unitary authority of Medway, in Kent, South East England. The town forms a conurbation with neighbouring towns Chatham, Rochester, Strood and Gillingham. Historically, Rainham was a separate village until, in 1928, it was added to the Municipal Borough of Gillingham, which was originally created in 1903 and was grouped into the latter's built-up area in analysis of the 2011 census by the Office for National Statistics. It became part of the Medway authority when Gillingham was incorporated with the other towns to form Medway Unitary Authority in 1998. The M2 is a motorway in Kent, England. It is long and acts as a bypass of the section of the A2 road to run past the Medway Towns, Sittingbourne, Faversham, and to provide an alternative route to the Port of Dover, supplementing the M20. It feeds into the A2, forming a 62 mile long trunk road from London to (almost) Dover. Stroud is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It is the main town in Stroud District. The town's population was 13,500 in 2021. Gillingham ( ) is a large town in the unitary authority area of Medway in the ceremonial county of Kent, England.
